McKenna Commits Future to Town
Friday, 11th Apr 2025 14:39

Town boss Kieran McKenna has committed his future to the club even if, as expected, the Blues are relegated to the Championship.

Last summer, McKenna was the subject of interest from Sunday’s opponents Chelsea, Brighton and Manchester United last summer, holding talks with all three, before signing a new four-year deal.

Ahead of what might have been another summer of speculation, the Northern Irishman, 38, was asked whether he was committed to the club even with the Blues set to be relegated from the Premier League.

“Short answer is yes. I’m still happy here,” he said. “The year has been a challenge, it was always going to be a challenge.

“The fact that it was going to be a big challenge was one of the reasons I wanted to stay last year because I felt it was the right thing to do.

“As I’ve said after the game a few times, I think the club has a fantastically bright future in many, many different ways. I think it’s a club that’s on the up, irrespective of a possible, you could say a probable, backwards step this year, I think there’s still the potential to make some big strides over the next few years.

“I’m excited to be part of that, I’m proud to lead it. I’m proud to lead the club where we’re in League One, I’m proud to lead the club when we were in the Championship and I’m proud to lead the club now in the Premier League. That doesn’t change my perspective too much.

“We’re already looking forward, irrespective of what division we’re in, we’re already looking forward to progressing the club further.”

Brilliant news. Just the boost we needed. Anyone can change their mind, but that's close to a cast iron guarantee as far as I'm concerned, especially given K McK's character: straighforward and reliable.

Great news. Hopefully, most of the players will also stay so that we have a good chance to hit the ground running next season.

Great news for both parties, I think we are just a great match with where he is at right now, the age of his family, and his experience level. He has a long career ahead of him no doubt, and there really should be no rush for him to go to a big club, be put under a microscope and be under immense stress. We are a great set of supporters that are fully behind him, and our ownership group are experienced, successful and mature, which is exactly what he needs backing him up. So many basket case clubs out there with poor structures and twitchy fans / CEO's / owners, it is a great decision by Kieran to stay at the club where he can further develop. As people say, we have learned a ton this last season, and he can start to map out the vision for a squad that can survive that 1st season in the Premier League and build that squad now he has the time to do it. We can be in Villa / Forest's position if we continue to make sensible decisions which I am sure we will do.

All the naysayers on here who predicted he was leaving have been proved wrong. Excellent.
Great news.
Now let us see about Liam ......

Also worth taking into account that the club has just embarked on an extensive rebuild at Playford Rd designed to McKenna's requirements. Where else might he get that?

Some funny folk on here. When the gaffer defends a player on here after a bad game they rightly point out what else you expect him to say. Like others have pointed out this is the same and he's clearly not going to say "no had enough and I'm off to next club that puts in an offer".
I think he will be here next season. Will fancy his chances of getting promoted again and likely to be backed financially. Like others have said he will likely have less suitors this summer after relegation. Also it was widely reported he was made on of the best paid managers last year.

This is fantastic news and should help some of the Town fans sleep better over the summer. As I said after last season ended, he is going nowhere. He has a project here and is being backed by Ashton and the owners and investors to complete that project. £30 million being spent on World class training facilities, £130 million spent on new players and no doubt more money available to sign players in preseason.

Listen to what what Kieran says in interviews and listen to the Ed Sheeran song his always sings "I found a love, for me". He is NOT going anywhere. He loves it here in Suffolk and who wouldn't.

Stop all this negativity. He is NOT going anywhere. He loves our club and has a project to complete. End of!

Kieran is not going anywhere. He LOVES it here in Ipswich. It is his club. If anything he is doing a Wayne Rooney (when he was seen with a Spanish-English dictionary in his hand to get a better deal from Man Utd. Could you really see Rooney learning Spanish?). He wants to leave a legacy at Ipswich and he has not yet completed his work here. I said when he came that he was on the same path as Sir Alf Ramsey. Same age, same promotions and now for the Premier League.

We bought 13 new players before the start of the season. You can not build a team overnight with that many new changes. Look at Sir Bobby Robson's start at Ipswich and Sir Alex Ferguson's start at Man Utd. Two managerial legends of the game. Imagine if both of them had been sacked or left to manage another team.

This is Kieran's team just like it was Robson's and Ferguson's. I can see him being here for many years.

This is brilliant news. This is the Ipswich way; keeping faith with our talented young manager whose attention to detail is second to none, who is respected by the players, who understands that success isn't built in a day, that a club is more than the sum of the parts, that our club is special place to be, that it is a club of destiny. We have not had it so good for many a decade. What a privilege it is to support the Town and to have McKenna at the helm.

blueboy1981, I think maybe look at the bigger picture.
Absolutely nothing to question or doubt McKenna about.

Could've done with him saying that last May just after promotion.

I think this is positive news...hopefully he'll install a different style of playing next season, and hopefully a stronger side than last Championships campaign.

Why on Earth would he EVER want to go to a smaller club like Brighton or Crystal Palace? Far fewer fans and no history. If he stays at Ipswich for the duration of his contract he is guaranteed legendary status and a job for life if he wants it with virtually no risk of being fired unlike anywhere else.

I agree with those who say his stock has fallen and that ITFC is the biggest club that would have him right now. I’m glad he’s our manager but I have to say I lost a bit of respect for him last season over the way he extracted more money out of the club. McKenna was rewarded with a much improved contract when he took the club out of League One which included a bonus for promotion to the Premiership. He collected his bonus and he deserved it. But getting into the Premiership is one thing; staying there is another. What exactly did McKenna achieve over and above what was in his contract to warrant yet another pay increase? I believe Mark Ashton and the board should have been tougher and told him he would only get more money if he kept the club in the Premiership and that if it wasn’t good enough for him then he could leave.

I agree with most of the sentiment on here, it would be great for us if he stays. Two promotions in two years, means he has a fair bit of time before anyone should question him. Hopefully he can keep building a team to get us promoted AND be competitive in premier league.Big ask though

Football, much like life, teaches you to rule nothing out. But like most on here I see it as a positive that KMcK is here for the next phase. What always surprises me is how all his detractors claim to know what was or was not part of any contract he and the club agreed over last summer!
Undoubtedly, he’s made mistakes and been found wanting on occasions over the season but it’s been as much as a learning curve for him as for the rest of us.
I think back to the Dark Lord, Hirst and Lambert and I know who I’m happier with, warts and all!!

I hope he has learned a lot from last season and some shrewd and careful purchases will be needed in the summer, unlike last year. If we could persuade Delap to stay that would make it a done job.

Bert added 18:13 - Apr 12
I’m sure he knows that given the backing he has been given this season, the club would expect loyalty from him. He will have learned a lot and with a squad already prepped for the championship
next season, this should provide the basis for another tilt at the PL. The owners may have to pull back a little given Trump’s attempt to upend investment strategies but in reality the club has already invested in the squad and funded the infrastructure improvements so I cannot see too many fault lines to worry unduly about. We are in a far better position than many clubs.

With McKenna in charge we should look forward to a good season next year. Currently 6th place in the Championship is 26pts behind the top 2 and 21pts behind 3rd, Remove the top three and the rest of the Championship are not that good. Replace them with the bottom 3 from the Premier league and we will probably see a similar story next season. It's repeating each year that the top Championship clubs and the bottom Premier clubs are too good for one league but not good enough for the other. Burnley are the prime example as they ran away with the Championship then got relegated and are now back in the Championship where they have lost just 2 games in 42.
