Hackney Turns Down Town Move
Saturday, 2nd Aug 2025 14:53

Blues target Hayden Hackney is reported to have turned down the chance to join Town from Middlesbrough.

TWTD revealed on Tuesday that the clubs had agreed a fee of £15 million and the 23-year-old travelled to Suffolk on Friday for talks with personal terms also having been provisionally set.

Now, according to the Northern Echo, Hackney has told Boro officials that he has opted not to make the move to the Blues.

The England U21 international was anticipating making a Premier League move this summer but with no top-flight interest so far forthcoming. It’s presumed he is hoping that changes before the window closes.

Hackney, who was left out of the squad for last week’s friendly with Rangers, is on the bench for this afternoon’s game against Deportivo La Coruna at the Riverside.

Hackney had been on Town’s radar all summer with the £15 million fee - plus a further £5 million should the Blues win promotion - having been agreed more than a week ago.

The Redcar-born schemer’s decision is likely to be behind Town’s reinvigorated interest in re-signing Jens Cajuste on loan from Napoli with Italian reports claiming a deal is close to being completed.

Hackney’s decision is also a blow to Boro, who had hoped to use the finds raised to fund other moves.

Wonder if he can’t get his head around leaving the area he grew up in,and can’t get the confidence to commit ?
It’s a shame but it may well be he will want to reconsider — especially if no ‘bigger’ PL Clubs come calling .
Little doubt there will not be tears at PR ,we shall simply move on !

Fair enough, we move on!

If we were prepared to stump up £20 million for him my guess we will be looking for at least one more midfielder even if we get Cajuste.

Hayden Hackney, I believe you've made a big career mistake!

HH = Ho Hum. If he wants Prem football and is prepared to wait to see if anyone comes in late so be it. Don’t think anyone will though

Fair play if he wants the Prem this season I guess.

A year on - and only a certain category of player is / will be interested in joining us now.
Different situation to last August completely - hard cheese folks and you don’t like it - but 100% FACT for all the delusional to digest !!

Not surprised really. McKenna is a big draw but the club have arguably sold two of their best players and haven’t been particularly active in the transfer market, they appear to be shedding staff so maybe the ambition doesn’t match Hackneys. Time will tell. Cajuste will be a decent addition if he can maintain fitness. Once again he didn’t jump at the chance to return until he ran out of options. I’m not feeling optimistic with our current squad as still light in midfield and up front. Many players will be more comfortable and effective at this level.

Why did McKenna and Ashton mske such a big deal out of ssying thry would only pursue plsyers who wanted to be part of the project. We kick off Fridsy and like last season we are going to see more low quality last minute panic buys. Not goid enough

Before everyone starts slating him, just remember, he is only reported to have turned the move down. So may be true, may not be. If he has, then so be it. Will obviously have his reasons for doing so. Is his right to decide what direction he wants to take in his career after all. Certainly doesn't owe us anything.

His preferred destination is, apparently, Spurs. Good luck with that. We must move on asap - no looking back in anger!

Talk of Tyler Morton if we can get ahead of Lyon. Shame all our deals seem to be in the public domain these days

Hope he doesn’t get premier League club coming for him spend most of his time on the bench this season

Obviously disappointing that he has turned us down but probably not that surprising TBH Credit the ambition from Mark Ashton and the club to try and bring him in and I am sure they will have a plan B & C for the CM spots (sounds like already moving on Cajuste)

The lad clearly thinks he can do better, maybe not this window, but that he will get a PL ckub in the near future. So might as well stay at Boro.

Blueboy still 100% FACTS and slagging anybody who disagrees, had hoped he would have turned over a new leaf, and accepted other people can have an alternative opinion and he is not ALWAYS right, oh well ,(sigh) .As for Hackney he may be good and though not interested in Town, hasn't exactly had a stampede of prem clubs after his services, we move on .

Lots of bitter comments on here, strange as he would have been the best thing since sliced bread if he decided to join. He’s a young man, he’s made the decision he feels is right at this stage of his career. FWIW, I believe he would have been working with the best young coach outside the Prem but we move on.
I hope we can get a couple in this week ahead of the season opener.

Apparently he is hoping for a move to Spurs. With the midfield players they have - about 7 - no chance.

His loss and we move on!

As I said he's waiting for a Premier league club to come in for him so that he can spend most of his time warming the bench. Next!

All credit to the lad, he made a quick decision and didn't string us along, so that has to command some respect.

Cajuste hopefully will now be back and another strong signing maybe from the continent at way under rip off price. Hopefully Tony Blooms system which we were not allowed access to last season will be put to good use. MA really needs to get his recruitment dashboard delivering better results.

Let’s just move on quickly from this one! He came, he saw, he didn’t sign. Be interested if he does get a move to a PL side in the north or whether he stays with Boro
