Woolfenden Undergoing Coventry Medical Monday, 1st Sep 2025 11:27 Town central defender Luke Woolfenden is undergoing a medical at Coventry City ahead of a deadline-day move to the Sky Blues, TWTD understands.
The Midlanders made an approach for the 26-year-old earlier in the window which the Blues rejected but have now accepted a £4 million offer.
Speaking at the weekend, manager Kieran McKenna confirmed that the academy product wanted to move on.
“Luke’s made it clear for quite a while that he wants to go, so we’ll see what that situation ends up in,” he said.
Stoke and Watford were also among the clubs interested in the Ipswich-born defender.
Former East Bergholt High School pupil Woolfenden joined the Town academy aged 11 and made his first senior appearance in the Carabao Cup in August 2017.
Spells on loan at Bromley and Swindon followed, before periods in and out of the team under various managers prior to establishing himself as a key member of Kieran McKenna’s side which won back-to-back promotions.
The Chantry-raised defender’s games were more limited last year following the signing of Dara O’Shea and the same looked to be the case during the campaign ahead.
In total, Woolfenden, who signed a new contract which runs until the summer of 2027 with an option for a further year in January, made 204 starts and 11 sub appearances, scoring five goals.

Gutted. Their gain. Bigger rival the Sheff U this year too ! HOWEVER, not sure if/when/how but feel like Woolfy will come back to us !

Shouldn't have sold both Wolfenden and Burgess, in my opinion I'd have been playing Burgess right now after what I've seen so far this season. Mistake!

We all have fond memories of those who took us to the PL but nostalgia rarely improves a squad. The scrutiny and accountability Darkhorse calls for is here already if only he would choose to see it. Not every move in or out will be favoured by all but nobody can deny that the club in the last few days has made some very promising acquisitions . .

Lighteningboy - "Really sad day in our recent history...you can't buy players with Woolfie & Harry Clarke's attitude." Loved Woolfie and Clarke, and you are right their attitude was great but They're not at the level we're going to need to get promoted and certainly not for the Prem should we get promoted. You also do realise we can only name 25 in a squad right? where would he fit in if not letting him go?

According to Sky the fee is £4 million. Seems very lightweight to me if AAH's fee is £3 million. Would have expected between £7-10 million. But then he wants to go and we clearly don't want him. (We as in the club)

Good luck to Wolfy. Not sure he's quite the player a lot of fans seem to think he is, his laid back style has a habit of getting him in trouble and he seems to have reached his ceiling ability wise. Never nice to lose a home grown player but, head over heart, this seems to be a decent move for all involved.

Darkhorse28. OMG. So much bs as always. Get it in ur head. The club is not for sale and there will be no new ownership anytime soon. And anyone who thinks there should be is just an idiot. £200m in e windows, would embarrass championship lge clubs? Laughable comment. Man city spent more than that on one player. Woolfy is a decent player, but hes not gonna get ahead of O'Shea. And remember, its not our decision to sell, he has asked to leave. So dont want any player here, who doesnt want to be here, regardless of their reason for wanting to go. And I get the fact he wants to play more. So understandable. Have to remember too that his fee will be 100% profit.

This has been rumbling on for weeks now.... Far better to move players on that don't want to be here in roles they have been given... A player with "the right attitude", as some have put it.. Would be willing to fight for their place in the team, set an example to youngsters in the club and be a positive force in and around the dressing room. And carry on helping with the good community work that the club do. Take the Blue tinted specs off.... He was rewarded with a decent contract and a role at the club. But he wants out.

I can understand why he wants to go as he has seldom been given a chance of having a run of games. I find this odd because of all of our defenders he looks the most comfortable on the ball. Given that large fees were paid for the other defenders it was obvious they were going to start games ahead of Luke despite the arguably being no better. Good luck at Coventry Luke I’m sure you will do well there.

Always hard to see a local lad move on, but we have to try and up the quality of defending, although I'm still not sure about O'Shea or Greaves. Would definitely kept Burgess. But let's see how all the new signings turn out. I do worry McKenna doesn't seem to get the best out of players.

To a rival again insane really. Woth the way we have started the season other teams do not need us to help them out they ate doing fine without a helping hand. And lets get a grip on saying stuff like Greaves haters it is football..if the extrenely well paid player is not performing to his wage then it isnt haters it is supporters quite rightly airing their views I agree he has not lived upto his fee and wages and he has had time. He is part of a defence that has shipped goals in every home game in 2025 si lets not applaud that but also it is not said with hate just proven facts the defence is an area of concern that has not been strengthened adequately looking at last eight months displays.

Some truly insightly comments going on in TWTD recently. This one is another golden nugget; "New ownership can’t come soon enough" almost immediately followed by "We need to get behind the club".

Coventry have a bargain at 4 million. Think Woolf best suited in a back 3 as the right sided centre half. He must be replaced though.

I've been out at work for 35+ years now. I can tell you unequivocally, that if someone has decided they want to leave their place of employment, they will. You can't force people to stay and be happy and give their best, if they're not fully committed, it's best to let them go. Yes I'm sad Woolfenden is leaving, the iconic number 6 shirt is now vacant, but this life.

The ONLY positive we can take from this is Wolfy will get to batter Norwich on his debut for Cov. Really sad to see him go as he's one of our own.

There is So much love for Wolfie, a decent player but not the world beater some think he is. For me too slow at times! I think sometimes he is overloved for being one of our own! Good luck to him and we move on.

Yes we appear to have squandered millions on some of our acquisitions and only time will tell how well we can get out of it. As to the manager it should be refreshing and healthy to be able to voice ones opinion. My take is that yes the boy done well to achieve the two promotions but on more recent form he is lucky to have his job. What other club would tolerate such an appaling run of results. Lets see where we are in a few weeks time. In theory in money terms anyway he has one of the best sets of players but what can he do with them that is the acid test.If he cannot produce the goods then step aside and let someone else have a go.

Good luck Woolfy. A decent defender; one of our promotion heros. But unfortunately does not qualify as a Town great . By escaping the cull he didn't grow by the required standard. Unfortunately Kevin Beattie was near perfect

A sad day to see a local lad go but he wasn't getting in our team on a regular basis & not even a place on the bench recently. Wolfy deserves regular first team football. Sadly he wont get a testimonial now, I know few players do these days but he was the one one to come even close for a very long time. Other than that the only real disappointment is the fee. Was hoping for something around £10m but definitely expecting over £5m. Not sure why we couldn't hold out for more as we know Cov were desperate for a Central Defender having been knocked back by Hull for their Greaves replacement Charlie Hughes. . Had it got to 5pm they might have thrown another couple of million in.
Arthur_Hayes added 14:51 - Sep 1
£4m! - That’s a good deal for Coventry, considering we paid over £15m for Greaves.
