Blades Sack Selles Following Town Thrashing
Sunday, 14th Sep 2025 11:09

Sheffield United have sacked manager Ruben Selles following Friday’s 5-0 thrashing by the Blues at Portman Road.

That defeat was the Blades’ fifth of the season in the Championship leaving them bottom of the table without a point, while they also exited the Carabao Cup at the first-round stage.

Last season, the South Yorkshiremen finished third in the table before unluckily losing 2-1 to Sunderland in the play-off final.

Manager Chris Wilder left the club following the failure to win promotion with former Hull City and Reading boss Selles taking over in June.

Wilder is now expected to return for a third spell in charge at Bramall Lane.

No one who saw the game on friday will be surprised at that. Looks like we played them at exactly the right time. I can't see it being such an easy game if they put Wilder back in charge for the next one.

Sellés was a strange appointment as was Martin at Rangers and I suspect both will be looking for new jobs soon.

Wilder must be raking the money in being continually sacked and reappointed to the same job.

I think Sheff Utd should go with Steve Cooper

Sheffield Utd were playing the wrong team at the wrong time and luck didn't go their way either. They looked a threat against us in the first 20 mins on Friday, with a lot of possession and good pressing. If we're honest, they were unlucky for 2 of our goals. If they had scored early on or if they had played an easy Championship team it could have been a different scenario for him.

Seems very harsh to me.They could of at least given him the next two games to turn it round, which i believe are Charlton and Oxford, both very winnable.

@ringwoodblue Steve Cooper is Brondby manager

All our goals were scored from the left side of field and Selles never solved the problem so the sack was inevitable. Sorry for him as his recent record is so poor and I don't think many EFL teams will want him on their short lists. Wilder will not be the answer third time as the championship has moved on in his absence. There are a lot of young hungry managers like our KMc with more progressive ideas.

Sean Dyche is a likely contender.

Just like us he had a lot of new faces to blend into his team but unlike us the top brass at SU haven’t really given Selles enough time to make it work.Wilder has sentiment with him but he is old school so may not be enough to address why they collapsed towards the end of last season.

No time offered as usual. Instant results always expected. I dare say had we not won on Friday there would have been a few short sighted calls for McKennas head.

No surprise. Sheffield were poor. That’s football nowadays.

They set up completely wrong on Friday...played right into our hands, no surprise at all he's gone.

Chris wilder, really? Only a fool does the same thing expecting different results!

Right now I suspect they would take the ‘same result’ - ie getting to the playoff final…

Why did The Blades sack Wilder in the first place? It was a bizarre decision at the time. Occasionally, reality is stranger than fiction, this being a case in point. I expect Wilder back at the helm for them over the coming days.

If I was Wilder I'd tell them to poke it !

Harsh but football is a results business. They bossed position in the first half with no end product and Town had help because they came to okay football rather than do a Derby.

The humiliation of the owners having to correct their ridiculous decision and go back to Wilder or the lack of self respect from Wilder if he doesn’t tell them to shove it… not sure which is more cringeworthy

Five games is a bit harsh. Plenty of coaches have been able to turn it around.

Broadbent23 - Wilder has been absent from the Championship for 5 games. Has it really moved on that much since then?

He last had a team were top of the table in April.

Monkey_Blue - Wilder is Sheffield through and through though. All he wants to do is manage the Blades so I can't see him turning them down.

Hokey Cokey United.
You put your Wilder in, your Wilder out,
in, out, in, out, you shake it all about ...

Personally, I'd like to see any sacked manager replaced with ones that let us beat them 5-0 each time.

Whilst I feel sorry for Blades fans at least they can console themselves with the fact that they don't support Derby.
