McKenna: McAteer Making Really Good Strides
Friday, 30th Jan 2026 17:32

Town manager Kieran McKenna says summer signing Kasey McAteer is making really good strides and can play a big part with the Blues over the next few years.

The 24-year-old joined Town for £12 million from Leicester City, where he had come through the academy, in the summer, signing a four-year deal.

Irish international McAteer admitted in October that he had “found it tough” following his switch, but knew “there’s more to come from myself and I believe in myself”.

Quizzed on McAteer’s progress since then, McKenna said: “I think he’s making some really good strides, both behind the scenes and with the minutes that he’s had on the pitch of late.

“I think he’s a player that has qualities that are really, really hard to find. I have to say, he arrived late, he arrived from a rival, there’s a transfer fee and things like that.

“Lots of things that make it difficult for a player to settle at a new club without a pre-season and arriving in a season of big expectations and things like that, none of which are anything to do with Kasey.

“He’s very young, I know he’s 24, which might not seem very young, but football-wise, he’s really young. He’s a late developer who grew late, started playing regular first-team football late, but we think he’s got really good qualities.

“He’s six foot, he’s absolutely rapid, he’s good with both feet, can go forwards and backwards, and we think he’s got potential to keep improving.

“Like many of the players who came in, or even lads who’ve been here, he didn’t quite hit the rhythm at the start of the season, which can happen to the best players in the world transferring to the best clubs in the world.

“But he’s stuck at it, we’re seeing growth in training and in the minutes that he’s had lately, I think he’s taken some steps forward. It’s difficult because Wes [Burns] has also come back into the group now.

“Wes has the benefit of promotions here, goals here, confidence of the crowd and everyone behind him, and he’s settled into the team really well.

“But Kasey’s a player that we’ve got to keep supporting and pushing because we think he’s got a really good chance over the next few years to have a good career.

“I think if you look at where Wes was, maybe at 24 he was playing right-back for Fleetwood for the next three or four years, and I think Casey’s got some of the same qualities, but is still a bit younger in terms of learning the game and learning how to use his qualities and growing into himself.

“So we’re happy with how he’s progressing, we know he’s ready to contribute as and when the team needs him, and he’s someone that we think can play a part here over the next few years.”

Would love to see him have a decent run of game time .. not really seen his true ability yet

His qualities are hard to find? Your right there, for what we paid for him I haven't seen the quality to match the fee. It's like we play with a man down when he's on the pitch. However.....I shared the same thoughts on Philogene and Clarke last season so proves what do I know!

Undoubtedly a talent. I must admit I thought he was much older, so encouraging that he's improving with more minutes on the pitch. The boss will bring out the best in him, be patient!

Cloddyseedbed. Can o ly assume you havent been to many games lately. Has been much improved the last few times hes come on. Andzactually, all along , juch better defensively tham Amy other of our right wingers. Still a way to go beforehand schism best, for sure, but as I've said all along, not all players settlexatza new club immediately.

The guy is a whippet, if we actually get round to playing him and playing to his strengths, few defenders will live with him. When that might be I don't know, but if it was up to me, it would be now. Not sure where KM gets his " minutes on the pitch lately " from. He's only been on there for about 50 minutes over the last 6 games, and started just 8 since he's been here. Amazingly he still gets called out by people in here and elsewhere, even when he isn't playing too. My advice, forget the price tag, nothing to do with him.

As with Egeli, I hope to God we haven't seen the best of him. He's offered next to nothing. Lacks real pace, takes the wrong option, can't cross the ball and looks a poor finisher. Up to now he's been a very uninspiring signing.

Many on here said much the same about Philogene and Jack Clarke. Give the lad a chance

The audacity of some of our fans... 'look how much we've paid for him, should be better' (paraphrase), not long ago we were raising eyebrows at spending £1 million on a leftback (Leif), now some fans have got all big-time and think they know the value of players better than our management layer. Back the lad and he can only get better. I thought at Leicester he looked really threatening and a real talent, confidence has ebbed away from him and as FANS we should be getting behind him. Can't wait for him to silence the entitled few.

Needs to gain some confidence. Can only do that by playing. KM doesn't seem too keen on that atm.

He may have many qualities but quality appears to be one he’s lacking when it comes to a cross, final ball or efforts on goal. I’m not writing him off and the fee isn’t his fault, but if I were a gambler I don’t think I’d be putting much money on him to become a star at Portman Road. I’d love to be wrong though

I despair at some on here if they think he's a talent, he's marginally improved over recent game time but that's not saying a lot...

KMK truly an outstanding manager and communicator.

I think kasey has looked really rubbish frankly. But if KMK sees - it I’m listening immediately and respectfully

TimmyH, recent game time? He's had 50 minutes since the 29th December. KM likes him, I know who's opinion I'd rather listen to. Just when are people going to give the guy a break? Maybe they were expecting prime time Ronaldo.

This is an odd case. Both Kasey and Sindre seem to play the RM/RW role differently to Wes. After half a season of doing that, you have to think that is by design, even though it stifles them on the pitch. Am actually confused as either they are playing as instructed by Keiran and cannot play that way, or they are just doing their own thing and being poor with it?! Either way this is an odd situation and feels lie it is not so much on the players but the coaching....how about telling them both to do what Wes does?! Can't be worse can it?
