London advice
at 08:09 26 Jul 2019

Would have given the same advice as those before ... I) City Mapper app II) use a contactless bank card III) use the Thames clipper to travel along the river to get back from Greenwich, not the tube. Can do some sightseeing and much more pleasant - also cheaper than a tour boat

Would also add Tower Bridge and Tower of London are between Waterloo and Greenwich. If doing so I would advise going up the Sky Garden near Bank station. You can book in advance for free and skip the queues. You get a great view over London, can see The Shard etc (which costs £20+ p/p to reach the top)

Sadly, ankle dislocations often occur in combination with a leg break... not good news if true

Until VAR on offsides can work as quickly and effectively....
at 12:22 18 Apr 2019

I think VAR should be persisted with. It broadly improves refereeing and ensures crucial games aren't decided by bad decisions, plus it discourages cheating as players expect to be caught... perhaps if VAR existed in 1986 England would have another world cup to their name.

However, I think there are 2 key issues with the current system:
1. As you say, implementation is slow, often needlessly. All decisions should be analysed and reviewed off the pitch by a 4th official (maybe more). Watching a referee run over to a TV screen is pointless, whilst having multiple people in a room with many angles would surely be more effective. Hopefully for off sides the technology will improve to become almost instantaneous as the off side line is permanently tracked.
2. I also believe VAR is exposing a lack of transparency and understanding around the rules. We often see commentators, fans and even referees disagreeing about interpretation of the law. If the rules were clarified (and historical examples clearly shown for handball, foul, offside etc) then everyone would benefit. Particularly if they were defined in a manner that made them more black and white from the perspective of VAR (i.e. remove interpretation and intention from outcomes). I believe this is effectively the change to the handball law next year.

Serial Series 3
at 13:33 5 Sep 2018

Series 1 was great because it was so relatable to your everyday normal person. The descriptions of youth, relationships and memories all helped draw you in to the story - encouraging you to cast your own judgements.

Series 2 could not have been further from this, most people can never relate to the experience of an escaped(?) PoW, and the drawn out style inevitably quickly lost interest. It would have worked as 1-2 show, but not a stand-alone series.

Fingers crossed for more of #1

If you google Marcus Maddison, the wikipedia entry under the goodle search results inserts 'selfish' into his middle name, though it doesn't then appear on the page itself.

Heading a football - it is quite hard to justify in this day and age
at 19:41 8 Aug 2018

Is watching a defender head the ball away what brings much entertainment to the game?

I'm not sure forcing them to try and control the ball or volley it clear would significantly diminish from the game I watch now.

Arguably it could result in defenders being better footballers and a more attractive version of the game ... of course it may not.

I put another thread on this earlier and it got me thinking - would football actually be a worse game without headers? Arguably it could improve the game overall, let alone make it ‘safer’.

It would obviously be significant but it’s not as fundamental as tackling / contact in NFL and rugby where the debate is also very prevalent.

Brain Injuries in Football

That’s interesting, I hadn’t realised the US had already banned headers amongst junior age groups - I presume the change has followed the evidence coming from NFL and it hadn’t always been banned?

It seems sensible given the existing evidence. I’m sure without headers the junior game would would be no worse, and in all likelihood probably better. That got me thinking, would all football be better and more entertaining without headers!? Pulis would be out of a job and you would have less worry about high-footed tackles

Just came across the following article and had been unaware of the inquest before and thought others may have also been:
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-26817099

If the FA fail to publish any research then it doesn't reflect well on the organisation and will only look worse in the future as more details come to light, you only have to look at how the story in the NFL is unfolding.

Do parents with young children at the moment worry about letting their children play football, or other sports? It wasn't something that ever crossed my mind growing up so i'm not sure if the risks would have impacted my participation if the they were known, or the potential risks were publicised. I'm guessing those concerns are amplified when it becomes your children.

Current ITFC squad

The idea of losing Bialkowski and Waghorn from that squad is pretty terrifying

It strikes me that we lack any players (except Waghorn) with experience of playing football at a higher level (premiership or championship promotion level). Whether or not that will be an issue is unknown but I can understand the tag of being relegation candidates

It probably is just a coincidence, but it made me think anyway
at 11:48 3 Jul 2018

I think the technology has worked well, but what it has further exposed is the ambiguity with the rules and lack of consistency in refereeing within football, that I don’t believe occurs to the same extent in other sports.

This is the fault of the governing bodies as they have allowed vague and inconsistent interpretations of the law for such long periods of time. For instance, nobody really knows what constitutes a handball in the box. I don’t think it would be that difficult to publish 100 previous examples from matches and explain why they are / aren’t handballs going forward.

Chromecast vs Amazon TV vs ... advice
at 15:55 13 Jun 2018

Looking to get a cheap device (<£50) to enable use of a second TV that is otherwise going unused as no aerial connection.

Can TWTD’ers offer any advice on which is the best option? Looked mainly at the two in the title but open to others
- we have Netflix, can access Amazon prime but don’t really use it
- ideally would have access to Netflix, BBC iplayer, ITV, 4od, including live Tv. Maybe YouTube as well
- showing content from a phone/laptop would be a bonus
- unlikely to use it for watching long films, more as background viewing

Any suggestions?

good luck to jack Ross at Sunderland as he’s going to need it
at 09:20 24 May 2018

I think it makes perfect sense for Ross:
- he can go in to the club and forge his own team
- in an easier League
- with higher relative budget to be League, and probably actually higher than ipswich
- in a League where his own players from Scotland are more likely to make the grade
- and thereby if he gets promotion he will have his own team in place to take on the championship with a year more experience under his belt
- all while closer to home and on good money

I don’t know if any of this makes sense
at 23:55 7 Jan 2018

Agree a lot with what people have already said.

The other element I would add is that Evans clearly has a finite amount he can spend on the club over time. It’s therefore logical to phase the money to prolong staying afloat as there are no obvious buyers on the horizon.

If Evans did roll the dice, spend £39m in one year to meet FFP limits, risking future fines and disciplinary action, then it would bring a real threat of going further into the red, and administration once more - I don’t see how the club could come out of that above League 1/2. At the same time, unfortunately that’s the only way I see us getting promotion out of this division - going all in on red!

To what extent should he gamble with the future of the club?

Coventry, League 2 ... but they just got through to round 4 of the FA cup, so perhaps that’s still too optimistic

Yes, that hit me as the obvious outcome straight after posting it as I reflected a little more on the recent money from Mings and Murphy. I decided to try and forget about it all though, rather than edit the post and dwell on it any longer!
