Physics "Quiz" Question 11:25 - Apr 5 with 3619 viewsBOjK

You are in a small rowboat in a large swimming pool (don't ask).

In the boat is a large rock. You throw the rock overboard and it sinks to the bottom of the pool.

What happens to the level of the water at the side of the swimming pool?

Better still, he should throw himself in as the object. Then he will be closer and more able to see if the ocean has gone up.

I'm not a cook!

Although I am rather good at it.

I was more referring to the 69 days off for every 100 worked...

Errrrrr can I pass on that? I enjoy my leave far too much, this trip is 108 days and it will be worth it for about 85 at home with MrsNewcy. Certainly make up for lost time!

Yeah I work all 108 days. During the ocean passages I average 84 hours a week. On the coast it is usually 100+

Pretty much what lowhouse and reuser have already said.

It depends on the density of the rock. A large piece of pumice won't make the boat float much deeper in the water than if the boat was empty but it will displace the same quantity of water of a much denser rock (igneous or metamorphic) with the same volume.

Here's another.

A rope ladder is hanging over the side of a ship, with the bottom rung just touching the water. The rungs are 25cm apart. How many rungs will be under the water when the tide has risen 1 metre?

What is the rate of tide? Is the vessel stationary? Is there any squat effect which could cause an apparent change in draft?

What kind of security watch is being kept? You never leave a rope ladder just hanging over the side. You have to consider ISPS!

So why do boats sit lower in the water when fully loaded and higher when empty if the displacement is only due to the bottom of the boat and not the boat's content?

But the weight of the rock ceases to be displaced, so I would assume myallday is correct

None - the boat rises with the tide.
