Phil - cheeky, but can you pin?? I know a fair few of us are interested in chatting about this as well as ITFC.

To kick start - series predictions?

I am going Australia 2-3 England.

I predict 475 for the Aussies and then having a bowl at us tonight.

For the Aussies to win with the time remaining after that, that would probably require them getting us out for less than 250 and then chasing down 200 in the last two days.

Very doable.

Our second innings first four batsman need to stay in until lunch time on day four at the very very least. I think.

I love test cricket. It's so much better than the shirt formats.

Morning Rommy - I love test cricket too!

With no wickets so far, it means the very best we're likely to do with the new ball is one or two. With at least one of these two out beforehand, we get close to their tail with the new ball.

It's already looking like very hard work!

248-4. Ali gets S Marsh. That was a massive surprise and bonus ahead of the new ball.

Someone now, please get Smith.

Lovely ball that and, like you say, a real bonus ahead of the new ball.

It's quite clear that the differences in this series are

a) Smith
b) Pace
c) A spinner who can spin the ball

Our attack are trying wilfully but they look so unthreatening out there. No doubt, we'll have whoever is touring here in May (Pakistan I believe) 70-6 at lunch at Chester-le-Street and this tour will be forgotten.

We absolutely must start encouraging some young bowlers to bowl fast as outside the UK and possibly NZ, we are just completely nullified.

Do English players still play in other countries in the off season? They certainly used to but I suppose several of them now play the pyjama stuff instead for the bucks.

I couldn't agree more.

Smith has been superb. Root hasn't. That was the first big head to head.

We don't have the quick scary pace bowling line up needed in Australia to succeed. We miss Mark wood and Roland Jones I think.

Alli is having a shocker. Lyon is far superior.

But saying that....

🚨WICKET!🚨

Alli with a nice delivery. A rare good ball after being immediately smashed for consecutive boundaries in his first over as Root gives the quicks some rest before the new ball in 6 overs time.

Marsh edges through to the slip.

A surprise wicket. Could that be the moment Moeens tour changes?

248-4

The current sky lot are great. I miss Bumble, Nasser, Athers, Michael Holding and even Shane Warne!

Of the BT group, Gilly is excellent. Boycott is entertaining to listen to as well. Ponting is decent too.

My ideal mix and match commentary team would be them 8.

Can't say I've really noticed Swann - which perhaps is a criticism in itself - at this time of the morning it's not as tho there's much else by way of distraction! All the others have their distinctive qualities.

What did he say?

He led Gilly to believe that Broad had told him this morning before the days play that the England bowlers were angry with the batsman for throwing away the bigs advantage we had early in this test.

Eventually, he said that 'he never actually told me. I'm just inferring' after Gilchrist questioned why Broad was telling outsiders about problems in camp.

Swann randomly bringing it up in the first place was suspect.

Just all-round unnecessary bellendness tbh R

Evening Gainsborough. Hope you're well.

💯 up for Smith. A fantastic century from a fantastic batsman.

Unlike with Root, the captaincy has made Smith even better than what he was.

Yes this could be a tough day to watch. Though I think I've found a decent vetting angle on the Aussies scoring over a certain run rate in blocks of 15 overs. They're clearly going to continue at more than 3 an over. So at least I should make a bit of cash out the misery that will be Australian boundaries.

I predict a draw. As I said back on day 1 of the test match.

111 runs in the session at a run rate of 4.11.

The only positive that can be taking from that is that my bet mentioned above landed easily. Every time.

That's a good session for the Aussies. The run rate is a problem - when they get in front they'll accelerate and they could easily lead by more than 100 and give us a tough 10-15 overs at the end. Or they could go really big and get 200 in front.

Oh dear, what a prat indeed. Also apparently came out with this gem this morning re Root - whether he's right or not is another discussion, but saying it at a pivotal point inn the middle of the 3rd Test ..!

That's awful timing Ryorry.

I do think there's a debate to have about Root as captain - Smith has improved his average by about 15 since he took the role but it's not for everyone. However, the suggestion of Broad is laughable!

I love Broady but he'd use both reviews in his own first over!

He was a decent spinner though, and we could really use someone that good right now.

This is getting away from us.

Smith is incredible - he's played and missed at just 2 balls in his first 200. How can we get him out?!
