Just scrolling through the internet tonight 21:18 - May 6 with 10660 views | The_Romford_Blue | And came across the videos of street parties when Thatcher died. Literally thousands of people in the centre of London partying. I couldn’t believe it. I understand the hatred towards her and knew people celebrated but actual parties?!? Blimey. Did anyone on here go out celebrating? Just wondering really. + *Fwiw, I didn’t like the woman from the bits of heard and knew of her.

Do you think she had sleepless nights over those that died through implementing her political vision. F#ck her and all who sail in her.....evil bitch! Hopefully that's clear enough! |

Just scrolling through the internet tonight on 07:57 - May 7 by FrowsyArmLarry | Unfortunately, for the people you’re talking about, China happened. Thatchers government should have offered compensation to those affected i.e miners, but the government isn’t responsible for planning the entire economy |
I don't think it was China in those days, so much as oil. It is always overlooked in any analysis of the Thatcher era but was the single biggest influence. Firstly, the oil boom caused the pound to strengthen which in turn made British manufacturing uncompetitive, and that as much as anything brought a lot of manufacturing to its knees, heaven knows that Thatcher didn't do much to help though. Secondly, it was the oil tax boom that allowed her to buy votes with tax cuts. This was a huge mistake to my mind, what we should have done was husbanded the money for the future rather than blow it on tax cuts.

A despicable woman and, as someone has said, very popular with the Tories.

Deng Xiaoping’s market reform started in 1978. But you’re correct about the oil influence too. Of course this is too complicated and therefore unpalatable for the idiots mentioned in the op. I’ve not seen any of the ‘celebrations’ but my guess is that most of them were white trash like banksterdebtslave [Post edited 7 May 2018 14:51]

Bit of a Brexit type result really. Gave her a mandate to continue to destroy anything she wished.

My mum comes from Barnsley, I have 5 uncles up there who lost their jobs in the mines and steelworks. A quarter of the town's workforce worked down the pits, add to that the businesses built on taking the miner's wages when they spent them. It completely ***ked the place economically. It would be like taking the sea away from Lowestoft or Felixstowe. It was a nasty vindictive campaign, look at Orgreave. Police used as a political militia and all covered up, like Hillsborough was. Blame and punish the Northern scum was her manifesto.

My mate from Chesterfield alway says that she flooded the mines when shutting them so there was no going back. Don't know if that's true, but I assume so. Vindictive.

I was going to put that, but I cut it out. You are right, there's a good few hundred years of coal under our country, with modern filtration systems making burning coal not as environmentally unfriendly as it once was. Mines were flooded, sealed up with concrete so they couldn't be worked again.

and we buy coal from China which is so cheap partly because they don’t give a toss about health and safety and let twenty thousand a year die while mining. Scargill did nothing but make the situation much, much worse though. He has to take a large chunk of the blame [Post edited 7 May 2018 21:48]

I don't think we're going to go back to coal unless there's some kind of massive disaster and we end up a modern version of the dark ages. Ironically mine water is now being considered as a potential source of heating. A year or two ago I was asked to get involved in a feasibility study looking at the viability of the warm water being pumped out a disused mine in Northumberland to be the heat source for a network that would include a hospital (it didn't work out as it wasn't really convenient being based in London). There are several other places where it's being looked at in detail: https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2018/apr/08/energy-home-heating-uk-citie http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-south-east-wales-39218001
