Whats the craziest trip youve made following Town? 10:46 - May 26 with 6698 viewstextbackup

I'd imagine this is better aimed at the old chaps on here, for European trips back in the 70's 80's....

I ask because I've been looking on some Liverpool forums, the trips they are making/made are pretty mental.

We’ll be good again... one day

Does going to Peterborough to watch us get smashed 7-1 by a team featuring Paul Taylor count?

My hobbies include being quiet during trips, clapping with songs, and diabetes.

Getting lost going home from most away games is pretty standard

Probably Foggia away in the Anglo Italian Cup.
Hell of a place to get to,drunk as a skunk virtually the whole trip, got threatened by some Foggia supporters after game so we turned and faced them up, they ran, to pizzed to chase them. The whole trip was brilliant, one of the highlights was getting on the train at Rome yelling Blue Army and getting a response from a load of fellow Blues in another carriage.

Nothing major really but ones that stick out - all very boring.

I hitch hiked with a girl to Man C away when we were 14, we never made it. A Man U tvvat of a fan picked us up, thought we were City fans and took us miles out of our way. We ended up in Doncaster at kick off time.

Went to Luton with 8 in a car

Went to Watford with Kempy for a night game. We left Ipswich at 8am and missed the first 20 mins.

Genuinely can't think of anything more interesting.

I had my first tart in Amsterdam in 81

Probably two unglamourous home games for me.

In the 2000-01 season I had a free flight to use up through my work in NYC so I booked a day trip to the UK just to see Ipswich v Charlton. Went straight back to NY after the game as I had to be somewhere the next day (in the US). 7,000 miles round trip for a league game.

I ended up doing something similar later that season, unintentionally. After we beat Brum 1-0 in the first leg of the league cup semi, I confidently booked a weekend trip from NYC for the final. Of course, we got tonked 4-1 in the second leg, and our glamourous Wembley final against Liverpool turned into a miserable home game (against Everton I think?). Not the same thing. But still about £500.

Edit: thinking about it, the final probably would've been at the millennial stadium that year.

Motherwell for a testimonial match. About 50 Town fans there as I remember.

Ah, things are coming back - your post has reminded me of a couple - nothing major though, I suppose you had to be there.

Swansea away circa 82. Left Friday in a minibus, ended up in Soho, then on to Swansea. Football on the beach AM, massive beerage and tomfoolery. Got back to Ipswich - via Soho - Sunday.

Brighton away circa 82. Left Friday night after beerage in town (I had eaten a load of jellied eels from one of those seafood vendors that used to visit the pubs). Ended up in Soho and then in the morning went to Brighton. Sladey was in the minibus (older fans might remember the bloody mentalist) and for some reason we drove through Brixton. Idiot Slade started abusing the locals (it was not long after the riots). Anyhoo, I think we all sat on Slade and managed to get out of there. Ended up in the Brighton end and then escorted to away end, by this time I'm feeling a bit ill. After the game the whole of the Chantry transit got nicked (there were three vans) and after hearing they would be in for the night we toddled off to Soho again. By the time we got there I couldn't breath, my throat seemed to have blocked. All the others went to various joints in Soho and I just lay in an alley until about 4am when they woke me to go home. Went to emergency doctors the next day and it turns out I could have pegged it. I had a massive reaction from the eels.

Don't know why I bothered with all of that, it's not that exciting really.

Notable shout to Carly Mois who I believe was our designated driver on both trips - anyone remember him? I think he went to Oz.

Edit; Feck me I just re read this. I'm sure someone has to have some real decent stories.

Come on fellow irresponsible Blues.

A very mad thing to do. Age 14,,,,,,Wednesday. Oct 31st 1973 ....Straight from school. Jumped on train to London for League Cup game away to Fulham (2-2). Very very lucky to latch on to a bunch of older town supporters on train who took me to the game and back via a taxi. Remember a pre match pub where i was sneeked in and sat in the corner with a pepsi and bag of crisps.
Loads of trouble when eventually getting home.

Always wondered who these supporters were.

1981 .I was living in Madrid and went to meet brother and friends for holiday on the Costa Brava. Town were playing in the Gamper, Barcelona's pre-season tournament, and we went along. We went to Town's hotel to pick up tickets and followed bus to the Nou Camp. Saw Town lose 1-0 to Hamburg ( might have been Cologne) followed by Barcelona - Flamingo . Second match finished well after midnight.

Personally like these stories. The Swansea one sounds similar to one that a former team mate used to tell. Were the Bradley family involved?

As for Brighton think one of my friends was in minibus that didn't even make it to Brighton due to a bit of shop lifting at a service station on A23.

Yeah, D Bradley was on our bus. I liked him, I was a few years younger than all the other lot I hung around with, I would have been about 16 on that trip. I was good friends with most but I didn't know DB very well but he was really nice. There were a couple of others that were big bullies.

I was told that DB was thrown off a bridge at a motorway service station during a football scrap.

Ha. Those motorway service stations were mental, you never knew who you would bump in to. We bumped into Cambridge coming back from a Brum league cup game (Cambridge had been to Coventry I think) and we got quite the shoeing!

Ah! Here's another one.

We were on the special train back from Everton quarter final and Norwich had been to Man C. Football specials used to get routed everywhere and regularly stopped for ages to let normal trains take priority. We were stopped at Peterborough for an age and then a Norwich special pulled up right next to us - Carnage!

Not so much thrown off a bridge ...but probably would of been had he not jumped......alongside a few others who jumped on to a grass slope embankment. That was after a rumpus in the multi storey car park @ Luton. About 20 odd Ipswich swamped with about 50 odd Luton.

Yes they certainly were. I was a mere lad and just shouted abuse on the platform but loads of the "Bigger boys" got on their train and went through it like a hot knife in butter!

Didn't realise that the DB thing was at Luton, are we talking about the couple of games in the early 80's or before that? I would have known him during the former. I wonder if it was that game when we were in the pub by that shopping centre and then a load of Luton came out of the arcade. Before the game we were on top - but let's just say it was a game of two halfs!

The promotion game at Oxford. Went alone as I was living in Gloucester. Didn’t know it was all ticket but managed to get one in the stand to the left of the town fans. After the game I had to change trains at Didcott but fell asleep on the platform 🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺 When the station manager woke me, the last train had already gone. He directed me to a pub over the road that did B&B and so after securing a room, I carried on drinking. Woke up in bed at about 5am and realised I had no money, so climbed out of the window and down a drain pipe. Then had to hide for 3 hours until the first train. Hid in the toilet on the train and managed to get home.
Next day my girlfriend binned me as it was her birthday and we were meant to be going out after the game. What a day!!

Fairly routine compared to some of these on here, but I try to do a couple of distant away games a season - most of my mates in London (who support more fashionable clubs like West Ham, Arsenal, Spurs) etc think I’m mad though.

But the outstanding one is probably Moscow away in 2001, when I missed the coach to the airport and had to get a cab when I woke up about 30 minutes before my flight was due to take off... just about made it. Phew.

It was certainly the most I’d paid to see a single match, given we arrived late morning on the day of the match and flew back at about 7am the following morning.

Great trip though. I’ll never forget it.

Well all I can say is Hells Bells!

I have gone all my adult life remembering it as Everton but you are correct as I just looked it up. January 1981, Nodge lost 6-0 to Man C and we drew with Shrewbury.

The strange thing is that four months later I was in Amsterdam at the UEFA cup final but it feels like a year or so gap - I think that's why I always remembered it as Everton in 1980.

These are the stories that we are missing nowadays, sitting rather than standing the odd skirmish with the opposition.

Remember driving up to Sheffield in a Ford Transit with 6 mates, half way up the A1 a loud noise from the wheel arch. Get out and find the centre nut had disappeared from one of the back wheels.
Moscow in a particular hotel when all the fit Russian girls were up and down the stairs all night. Going through all the Ipswich songs, taking us back. My 16 year old son saying to his mother on our return, he was so good that he gave them his money back.
