These melts think it’s a great idea to fly drones near Heathrow, potentially endangering thousands of men women and children

I’m off to give them some abuse. Feel free to join me

Given signal detectors and jammers have been deployed, they're not having a lot of success.

If they were genuinely endangering anyone then flights would be suspended. There seems to be a worrying trend against the right to protest and take direct action on important issues.

It says some of them could face significant jail sentences. What sort of sentence would something like this get?

Attempting to fly drones into heavily controlled airspace with significant passenger air traffic is dangerous and criminal.

No persons right to protest is being taken away. However if you choose to protest by committing a crime you can, should and hopefully will be prosecuted.

Calling people brave for flying drones around an airport seems pretty loony to me.

Not to mention thinking it’s ok to potentially disrupt thousands of people’s travel plans

A 'right to protest' has limits.

That excuse only goes so far.

If you threw a brick through an MP's window as a form of protest, would you expect to get away with it?

That comes under 'their methods'. Their actual point is a good one. Especially so when the lungs of the earth are literally on fire.

Trouble is, it's all well and good but people tend to be put off by what feels like constant drum banging.

Most people are doing ten fold what they were only maybe, ten to 15 years ago.

Baby steps innit.

When people are made to feel bad for wanting a holiday once a year then they're going to switch off eventually and stop caring.

There has ever been an element of wanting to get arrested as some species of "protest martyrdom". The efficacy of this as a tactic is, at best, questionable.

Who has had more impact, people breaking into industrial properties or Greta Thunberg?

I have no issue with people being arrested for breaking the law. Most successful protest movements have relied on law breaking and subsequent publicity to achieve success. It's the hostility towards people protesting about something so important that I find troubling. Glad that twitter have taken appropriate action against the OP.

You'd have thought an organisation like them would have plenty of electrical engineers amongst their ranks who could switch frequencies.

Apparently the Met said the maximum punishment was life in the worst case scenario.

I assume they would actually have to nearly hit a jet in the air for that to be applied though.

Requires a fair bit of rebuilding, plus straying outside the permitted bands is not only an offence, but could interfere with other stuff (e.g. the emergency services, air traffic control). Or be interfered with itself.

Even changing frequency wouldn't necessarily defeat the countermeasures, given they will already have a wide detection band.

As you've said though - the band can't be that wide if they don't want it to interfere with their own stuff.

It's certainly possible given the expertise the extinction rebellion must have available to them via their volunteers.

It's also illegal as you've pointed out but that doesn't seem to be high on their list of concerns.

I don't see why the army or police marksmen(women) can't just shoot them.
