The article I read said he was held on suspicion of murder. I get how the inevitable outcome could lead to that but I also presume he had no intent to kill. Doesn't that make it manslaughter?
He deserves whatever he gets assuming he knew they were in there. Whoever else was involved needs hunting down and prosecuting too. I suspect that will prove trickier.

Makes you wonder whether the driver knew they were there (I suspect there's strong evidence to suggest he did, otherwise why arrest for murder). I knew a freelance drive once, and he used to regale stories of what he and other drivers would do to stowayas. He was a sick barsteward. I also find the empty gestures and comments from the likes of Priti Patel calling it sad rather vile. She's been pushing anti-immigration messages for a while, ironically whilst being someone who has personally benefited from her family immigrating to the UK in the first place. |  |

Yeah, as others have said, it's not very likely he didn't know there were 39 people in there, what with having to do checks etc. What amount of money would persuade anyone to do something so disgusting? And it might not have been the first time either.
One thing I think the last government was actually quite good on was the anti-trafficking/modern slavery enforcement. This must only be the tip of the iceberg.
In fact, one of the builders who came round here once spoke very little English and asked my housemate for some painkillers for an abscess in his mouth. Then he asked again later so she gave him the pack. I hadn't known this till after but probably should've told someone. If you can't afford 20p for a packet of paracetamol or get to a doctor for something like that then you can only wonder about the living and work conditions of those people. Terrible. | |

I don't know, I've never driven a lorry. I wouldn't have thought that weight, in the context of what a lorry can normally transport would be that much. The scenarios are:
- He let them in with a view to trafficking them, but then why leave them there? Unless he realised they were dead once arriving in the UK, and thought his get out would be to pretend he wasn't aware of their presence?
- He didn't know they were in there and it's a tragic accident.
- He didn't let them in, but knew they were in there, and decided to not let the authorities know and leave them all to die because he's some sick f*ck.
Being arrested of something may 'indicate' it, but I prefer to wait until the relevant authorities have done their work before jumping to conclusions. Being guilty of not doing checks is irresponsible, but the thought that it was a deliberate act, knowing they were in there I find staggering. [Post edited 23 Oct 2019 11:12]

It also depends if and how they were concealed within the container. Were they inside some sort of partition or crate, in which case their presence may not have been so obvious. As illegal migrants*, they had a major incentive to remain silent and undiscovered, even at risk to their lives.

Indeed. I also suspect the arrest on suspicion of murder is because they think that is the most serious crime they might be able to provide sufficient evidence to charge him for. I suspect manslaughter may be the actual charge.
A defence of not knowing they were in there is probably his most likely course unless he rolls over on some trafficking gang as a plea bargain.
Doesn't it also suggest a failure of customs at Holyhead too? Shouldn't they have some sort of infra red detection system as a routine check?
Whilst Hopkins will spin this as swarms of illegal immigrants wanting to come here, shouldn't it be seen as the fact there is no easy open border for many people from eastern Europe already and a failure of our own systems to prevent it? | |
