It's all going rather well for him. I suspect he'll be hanging around the corridors of power for years to come.

It's fun to laugh at, then you realise they can see pretty much whatever they want and never get called on it. It doesn't matter.

Not sure if it’s aired yet but Dispatches have done a program on Cummings and Seamus Milne that looks very interesting.

The fact that none of their parliamentary stratagems about brexit have achieved their stated aims suggests they don't get away with it.

Similarly, I see Nick Timothy is trying to be selected as Tory MP today, nice safe seat. Good to see him not letting abject failure get in the way of his ambitions.

It was on last night and I watched most of it. It was ok without being very revelatory. Dom is a libertarian wingnut who wants to drastically shrink the state and Milne is a Stalinist Anti-American who wants to drastically inflate it. I can safely say neither seem to be very intelligent and both seem highly committed ideologues.

They get away with saying these things though, with no repercussion and no attributable statements, just "insiders" or "senior sources".

And even when they do, they just find something else to lie about. And nobody cares.

This is the unattributable nature of lobby briefings. Same for all governments; under Mr Blair, for example, the 'Number Ten source' was always Alistair Campbell.

Whilst it's lovely it's got a name, it's still wrong and the problem is getting worse.

Absolutely no accountability for statements anymore. Why even bother appearing at anything to say something controversial, just use this and the media can report on it with glee whilst you're hidden in the background not having to deal with any repercussions.

Want to slander someone? Knock yourself out!

To add to which, far too many Westminster correspondents are more interested in the soap opera aspect of politics - notably with Brexit but also, for example, the protracted Blair versus Brown stuff from years ago - instead of the detail.

That's why so much mainstream news coverage of Brexit has been so lamentably poor: the detail and implications of any potential future relationship with the EU is too complicated it seems.

I imagine he is good at a few things.

1 )Using tech better than other people in politics. Given other people in politics were talking about banning encryption (an idea so hilariously stupid nobody could take it seriously) this does not seem like a huge stretch.

2) Knowing how to use tech to pull on peoples heartstrings through advertising, and knowing what to pull on (see the AV campaign for some of his early work).

3) Not caring about whether what he is doing is moral or not, just whether he wins.

Remember when everyone was convinced that he had some dastardly master plan to circumvent the Benn Act.

Turned out the best they could come up with was not signing the letter.

He’s not fit to lace Grieve’s boots.

Worth remembering though that what was reported was that not signing the letter was talked about far more than the fact that Boris sent the letter, which he said he was not going to do.

He's clearly a smart guy, but to me he also is clearly not as smart as being made out or he thinks he is.

Everything he does people panic that he knows what he is doing and we are all pawns in his big game, but how can it be the case when so much has already gone wrong.

If we end up leaving with No Deal, he'll be heralded as some genius for getting it to happen when it really doesn't seem to be the case

And what went mostly unreported in UK press was that EU received his letters, and ignored all bar the extension request. Bit like a frustrated schoolteacher dealing with an errant child.

Hang about. On both of those points...

How did the press write about him not signing the letter without writing about the fact that he sent it? It's pretty much impossible to write about one without mentioning the other, no?

And given that the press reported the fact that the EU received his letters and also that they gave the extension request (you might have noticed that in the papers), they've reported on that, too?

Recent events have been outside his area of expertise. He knows a lot about running a clever media campaign, but (evidently) not that much about manging Parliament to get the outcomes he wants.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?
