Yvette Cooper isn’t standing to be Labour Leader on 08:52 - Jan 7 by lowhouseblue | the risk is that with long bailey the party finally splits. the prospect of a labour government is already a long way off, and having to go through a period with someone like that will push it even further into the distance. you get to the point of wondering what the point is of a party that has no realistic prospect of power in the next decade or longer. |
It’s noticeable that with the exception of a Jess Phillips, the leadership contenders are bending over backwards not to criticise the dear leader as they are in the hands of the pro Corbyn membership. Even Kier Starmer’s launch video was all about how he fought Maggie in the 80’s.
Do the majority of voters even remember the Wapping strikes? And that Corbyn’s greatest achievement was to get former Yorkshire miners to brave the winds and pissing rain to vote Tory suggests it’s time to stop banging in about the miners strike. I fear Labour haven’t learned their lesson from just last month. Thatcher is dead. The battle for the 1980’s doesn’t need to be fought again. We need leaders who will look to the future and not the past. [Post edited 7 Jan 2020 9:50]

You'd hope that it is a nod to it to try and appeal to the harder left before dragging it back round to a place that can win elections. But agree it's not the best look, but they need to appeal to members not voters at the moment

the party has become a weird historical re-enactment club. they dress up and re-enact glorious defeats from the 1980s. in december we did a re-enactment of the 1983 general election with some complete arse playing the role of michael foot. now we're going to do the miners and our glorious crushing by thatcher. it's genuinely pathetic. and the only thing that's clear is that very few of them could care less about labour voters.
| And so as the loose-bowelled pigeon of time swoops low over the unsuspecting tourist of destiny, and the flatulent skunk of fate wanders into the air-conditioning system of eternity, I notice it's the end of the show |

"Even Kier Starmer’s launch video was all about how he fought Maggie in the 80’s." That's not what the film is about though. It's his history in Labour and fighting for social justice of which Wapping and the unions fight against the Thatcher government was a start. Can we have 2020 without your incessant editorialising of stuff?

Thanks for posting that. I didn’t realise Keir had provided free legal support for the McLibel trial, or brought charges against Labour MPs for their expenses.

You have Boris. He's your leader and he is taking us into the future for the next five years. At least.

Yvette Cooper isn’t standing to be Labour Leader on 20:11 - Jan 6 by sparks | With her strong links to Blair's government, there is no way she could have commanded the necessary votes. One suspects she knows it. |
