Have we discussed Alastair Stewart? 11:35 - Jan 30 with 9131 views | GlasgowBlue | Apparently sacked by ITN for quoting Shakespeare at somebody on twitter who he disagreed with. Trouble was the quote mentioned an ape and the person he quoted it to was black. Apparently it's a quote he directs at everyone he believes has said something ignorant and I'm unsure whether he knew the recipient was black. Don't think it's as black and white (excuse the pun) as the case of Danny Baker. What does TWTD think?

Have we discussed Alastair Stewart? on 15:03 - Jan 30 by GlasgowBlue | He depicted the child of a POC as a chimpanzee. But we’ve done this in great length before Dollers so rather than repeat myself have a read through this thread. https://www.twtd.co.uk/forum/458543/page:1 Your “wog box” confession was TWTD gold. We have done it to death. And as such you should know that it wasn't the black and white issue you have stated here. Lucan has it right above. Danny Baker made a mistake but I don't for a minute believe it was intentionally racist. Just like Alistair Stewart's (and mine) weren't. Shame on you for suggesting otherwise, because silliness like you've perpetuated detracts from genuine racism. You of all people ought to know better.

Have we discussed Alastair Stewart? on 12:58 - Jan 30 by Lord_Lucan | It wasn't. I don't think either of them see colour, they just see people. Someone mentioned on here a while ago that it was interesting that all the pundits on a football broadcast were black, Glasgow posted that he hadn't noticed and I must admit nor did I. Ron Atkinson was black and white and despite what he said was way mental I still felt a bit for him as he is just from a different generation. My mum still insists that N**** Brown is a wool colour and my Dad (RIP) was always in a total state of confusion*** as he was bought up to say "Coloured" as "Black" was derogatory back then. He was the least racist man ever but got destroyed one Christmas by my trendy cousin because he liked Al Jolsen. ***I'm convinced that the fact he was buying his electric from British Gas and his gas from an electric company was the end of him. |
The hardest one to understand is how coloured person is offensive whereas person of colour is the correct term (well in January 2020 it is, maybe not in 5 years time) when it is literally the same description phrased in two different ways.

This is what Lucan posted at the time... “ I must say I agree, I seem to be in a minority here but I simply cannot comprehend that he didn't realise it would be offensive. I just can't get my head round it. It wasn't even funny, I think his position is indefensible” Binner “ Exactly right. If he thinks that it is acceptable to liken an infant of mixed ethnicity to a chimp then, regardless of any apology, he should never again be allowed near a BBC microphone. Portraying a black or mixed race person as a chimpanzee is also overtly and unquestionably racist.“ Bloots “ Taking out who the parents are and who he is, he has attempted to make a joke by saying that an ape looks like a baby of mixed racial heritage. Eventually saying sorry, and pleading ignorance (yeah right) doesn’t make it any less racist” I could go on but hey, you just make it all my fault fella if it makes you feel better. “She isn’t black”. “Wogbox”. Don’t ever change Dollers. [Post edited 30 Jan 2020 20:47]

Vapers my old mucker. Could you kindly point out what is trolling about having an opinion and backing up that opinion with posts from others who share that opinion? I know you have an absolute boner for me and follow my posts around like a love sick teenager, but you really need to do better than that. It’s quite embarrassing to be honest. Especially as you purport to be be a middle aged man with a family. Something is obviously lacking.

I think we agree that portraying the child of a POC as a chimpanzee is racist, regardless of intent. So my point was the DB episode was more black and white than that of Alastair a Stewart. Sadly Mr Needy wants ten pages of “he said she said” which I won’t indulge him in. Hence I linked the thread and let him knock himself out.

Well you’re certainly reading my posts so I’ll just copy the message I sent you here, which was an attempt to sort this no see out “off board”. This constant following me about. Is it really necessary? You’ve made it perfectly clear you don’t like the cut if my jib, which is fair enough, but it can’t be bringing you any joy in life obsessing over me the way you do. I have avoided getting involved in any of your threads, and for a while, refrained from taking the bait, but why not just ignore me if I upset you that much. Or just say nothing at all. I’m happy not to have any interaction with you on this board if you will reciprocate. Or we can both act like grown ups and at least try to be civil with each other. Either option is good for me but really I’m getting rather tired of your constant sniping from the sidelines and blatant attempts at trying to get me banned. The ball is in your court fella.

It's often a thoroughly depressing cross-section of humanity. A quick scroll through the responses to David Lammy's tweets are enough to make you think an accident involving a large asteroid might not be the worst thing to happen for the wider universe. I still can't quite decide whether there really are that many hateful people out there, or whether many are just bots or troll accounts funded by people looking to destablise democracies.

I don't need to read an old thread to know that saying 'Danny Baker was deliberately racist' isn't a black and white issue, thanks very much. As I said, saying so (and other such frivolous calls) diminishes genuine racism and you ought to be ashamed.

What Danny Baker posted was a jokey meme about privilege. I, like him, didn't know Meghan was a POC. He made a mistake, but wasn't being racist. Lots of people agree. Therefore it's by definition not a black and white issue. Again, you ought to be ashamed.

I'm sorry but if you think that, you're not sufficiently familiar with Twitter, and/or are following the wrong people; and/or are not using its powerful "block" facility when you need to. I find it exactly the other way round - 95% fantastically useful, informative, thought-provoking & fun; 5% unpleasant, bigoted trolls. Have been using it for over 6 years, very selective about who I follow & who I allow to follow me. Any abuse or bullying, just completely block - which is more than you can do on here. Wonderful photography from lovely people literally all over the world who I'd never otherwise have got to engage with, of things I'd never otherwise have seen. Political discussion with & info directly from UK MPs, MEPs, Councillors (& other ppl/politicians from USA, NZ, Aus etc.). Hobbies, art, literature directly published onto Twitter. Global comedy/cartoons/funny animals/pets. Immediate local info such as last-minute road closures. Complaints directly to retailers - which get sorted 10 x faster than normal channels as they hate publicity. Sharing views about TV, radio etc just seen/heard. The people who dislike it most seem to be mostly people who haven't stuck with it long enough to give it a really fair trial. I'd say it needs at least a year to acquire a good list of people worth following, and who will follow you. Their tweets are then primarily what you will see when you log in (unless you only follow hashtags that interest you).
