Low carb diet - I'm on 80g or less a day right now at the suggestion of a PT 14:15 - Jan 30 with 9302 viewsmonytowbray

Jesus, this best be worth it in a month or two. All the best foods are carbs, I never realised how much are in a lot of foods I assumed were healthy, rice being a good example. Bananas and cereal too, FML.

I guess if I survived 2019 and chronic depression/trauma I can survive not eating pizza for a month, right?! I woke up 3 weeks ago and looked in the mirror and realised I'm fatter than I've ever been as I've spent a year really not looking after myself so I'm determined to get back into better shape. Not interested in being a gym head or a beefcake, in fact people who claim they LOVE running or the gym confuse me. To me exercise is like going to work, don't really want to do it but the end result is something I want/need. I wouldn't wake up in the morning and plan a FUN day of exercise, I'd rather do many other things.

In an alternative universe the gym makes you fat and carbs make you ripped. The Callis in that universe is a lucky pr1ck.

As said. Keto works well if you can stick to it.
Side effects are bad breath and constipation for a while.
If you can exercise in the morning before you eat anything, your metabolism speeds up and uses more of your stored energy.

I strongly recommend these for people on low carb:

https://www.lowcarbmegastore.com/acatalog/Josephs-Pita-Bread---6-Pack-227g-LR072

Two of those is 120 calories and only 10g net carbs. Great used as a pizza base. I loved putting cheese and crispy bacon in them or chicken and bacon with black pepper mayonnaise.

Truly impaired.

I personally wouldn't bother. Carb restriction is just calorie restriction in disguise. There's no point. Take it from someone who spent 6-7 months on the Atkins diet. Studies have shown diet composition makes barely (if any) difference.

What he said.

The best diet is 'eat less, do more'. Lasting lifestyle changes ultimately work better than faddy diets.

I kind of agree, but tbh for me it's much more

'drink less, do more'

Though these days it's kind of been stripped down even more, I lose weight now if I follow the rule

'drink less..'

No idea when I began here, was a very long time ago. Previously known as Spirit_of_81. Love cheese, hate the colour of it, this is why it requires some blue in it.

I've never understood diets and have generally viewed them [that are sold as packages] as little more than commercial enterprise preying on people.

I can only speak for myself I suppose, but I know exactly what causes me to put on weight:

Beer and bread for a start. Pack those in for a while and I lose weight.

But it's basic maths. Take a pork pie in one hand and a carrot in the other and consider the difference.

I feel it's the 'allowed a treat' approach that makes people slip up. Why do you 'deserve' some treat? Besides, it leads to more of the same.

I'm keeping a close eye on My Fitness Pal so I can track fat and all that.

What happens if I go over calories on fat and protein? Would I just maintain weight?

My Fitness pal is a great once it’s all set up. Tell it what you want to do and it’ll give you a calorie count target. Stick to it and you’ll 100% lose weight and you can still eat carbs!

This times a thousand. A load of faddy bollox. I’ve met plenty of Nepalis working in the mountains who were as thin as sticks living off mostly rice.

This strategy will certainly facilitate weight loss but it is really not healthy or sustainable over the long term and as others have pointed out it is very likely you will regain whatever you lose once you reintroduce the carbs again.

It would also concern me that being a vegan you may struggle to meet the protein levels needed to ensure you are not constantly hungry.

Personally, I would recommend investing the £10 or so that this book costs and ditch the personal trainer. It's a fantastic book and really cuts through all of the BS, fad diets and general misinformation that is rife in the 'fitness' industry.

Edit. Also, I LOVE running, once you learn how to do it properly and build up the right level of fitness it is a wonderful way to stay fit and socialise and a big mental health win.
I used to feel like you about running, I didn't think it was for me and just didn't really 'get it' but I can honestly say its made a huge difference in my life. I have not ever been out for a run and not felt better afterwards.

Big mistake. You just need to reduce your food intake and exercise a bit.... not a big adjustment in either habit of a lifetime. Fad diets may or may not give you a temporary wight loss - and remember a pooh can lose you a few pounds just as a pint of water will put on a pound and a quater. The only way to get weight off is to eat marginally less (and cut down on alcohol) on a balanced diet - and do a bit of exercise

And if you are daft enough to waste time and energy getting bored and sitting in other people's sweat at a gym.... well try cycling there... you can then turn around and go home without having to go in.

I’ve got some vegan protein powder which helps.

I should add, I’ve got a PT advising all this, so going on his advice!

This diet works well for me. The weight just falls off quickly. Unfortunately it comes back quickly as you relax back into the old ways. Giving in to the supermarket bakery aromas.

I used low carb to shift weight quickly then switched to the 5 - 2 diet for life. Things seem to be holding up well and not interfering too much with enjoyment of life.

I have lost a stone in 2 weeks. Due to smaller portions and being more active. No faddy diets, just obvious solutions. Smaller plates also help.

Sure I understand that, but after reading the book I suggested, you soon realise that there are many PT's out there giving poor advise.

I'm not saying yours is necessarily because I don't know the full details, but I would be interested to hear what the long term plan is for sustaining any weight loss achieved in a healthy way.

Good luck though, I hope it works for you.
