Mathie 2, 27,42, Petra 56,81. A day the home fans will never forget. Mathie snaps up a joyous first-half hat-trick, the first after 64 seconds. He departs at half-time to protect a calf problem. After Robert Fleck's comical miss, Holland rolls the ball to Petta for the fourth goal. A run into the box leads to Petta's second. Town

My first derby, aged 6. Have some really vivid memories though, particularly the helicopter delivering the ball pre-kick off.
Interesting that our avg attendance that year was under 15k despite us being relatively good.
I remember the helicopter and it caused a bit of a delay to kickoff, so Rob Chandler basically quickly read out the Ipswich team and said something like "won't bother reading their team - who cares"
As so often in following Ipswich, a high point is followed by an ongoing low. We’ve only won 5 of the 28 derbies played since then.
I’ve supported Town for over 30 years and only made it to about 70 games in that time. I often feel that the period I would have most wanted to see week in/week out from that time would have been the last 20 league matches of the 1997/98 season. We picked up 52 points out of 60, hit 5 goals on four separate occasions, won every match in March and played splendid football by all accounts.

Hadn’t realised we missed so many penalties.
We scored five goals in three consecutive home games. TWTD.
Oxford and Man City were the other games I think. Didn’t Wright get clattered in the head and come back to finish the Oxford game with 2 dozen stitches in his head?

It was against Oxford. Wright goes off for stiches and stand-in Holland is beaten by Kevin Francis.

I remember the helicopter. Boy that thing was loud, ringing around those stands. Great game. Bobby Petta was a good little player. Always liked his style. Bit underrated l always thought. Anyone know whatever happened to him?

A perfect day...
Glad you mentioned the helicopter. I mentioned this to various supporters who had been there over the last few years and they couldn't remember it. I was starting to thing I imagined it at one point. Can't imagine they would ever allow that now - I'm surprised it was even allowed then. Amazing, amazing afternoon and the last one (probably ever) on Saturday at 3pm

I remember the match report in the Telegraph on the Monday after. It said something like "they usually say the form book goes out of the window in a local derby. Well in this case it came straight back in the window and hit Norwich squarely on the head"

Was the last derby victory I saw :( first season I had a season ticket too so didn't even get to keep a ticket from the game as a reminder.good chunk of their fans left at half time, but Marshall was at fault for at least 2 of our goals,it wasnt a game we thought we could win 5-0 to be 3-0 halftime was surreal, still got my Evening Star 5-0 badge and Ltd edn score cards. Always a shame they never released the whole game on video, only highlights.
The thing is at the time you dont really appreciate it as a this is a golden age of Town you are watching and 22 years later we'd be scrapping around in L1 so make sure you take it all in. It was just going to games was fun and enjoyable win lose or draw
