The big mistake with that squad was not pushing the boat out and signing Gio on a season long loan the following season.

He’d have torn the league up like Taraabt did for QPR.

Interesting!! Some names I'd forgotten in there. Interesting to see where some of them are now on Wiki!

Yes that squad looks pretty strong on paper. Light years better than what we have.

Most interesting thing - I didnt realise that Bart was on loan with us back then!

Came on a loan, played a game in the reserves and got sent off and we sent him back IIRC

Now that is a huge squad!

Very good squad.

Good first 11 but a lot of dead wood.

That's a pretty poor squad tbh. Magic really did badly with the increased funds. Full of players who were poor for us:
Lisbie
Balkenstein
Campo
Å umulikoski
Thatcher

One question looking at that squad.

How much a year were we losing?
There are some punchy players there.

Assumption is to make an ass out of you and me. Those who assume they know you, when they don't are just guessing. Those who assume and insist they know are daft and in denial. Those who assume, insist, and deny the truth are plain stupid. Those who assume, insist, deny the truth and tell YOU they know you (when they don't) have an IQ in the range of 35-49.

Seeing the squad in the OP and reflecting on what has happened since it does raise the suspicion that Marcus Evans came in with the primary aim of trimming the wage bill and success on the pitch as a secondary thing. I doubt this is his modus operandi for hospitality but that is the business where he is the one cleaning out other people's pockets and not having his cleaned out.

How on earth would that have helped Evans?

Clearly he thought the opposite. He thought by spending £12-20m, he could get a premiership brand.

I think back then many of us were more sceptical of hefty outlay on transfers and wages than we are now, but even £12 million to £20 million were not always enough to get into the Premiership (as Evans found out). And we can always cite Derby as the classic splurge and fail.

Anyone who was employed in a multinational during the nineties no doubt came across a Human Resources director who favoured 'churn' and dismissed tenure for all but the most vital employees. Continuity was placed behind the constant search for new, and yet to find their feet in terms of wage bargaining, talent. I can see familiar patterns at work in what has happened at Town in recent seasons. Cheltenham's list has caused me to think on the first year of Evans' reign too. The appeal of a well known name (Campo, Volz, Richard Wright, Thatcher) probably counted more for him than unknown potential. Hence goodbye Magilton, Hello Keane.

I am not saying any of this would have helped Evans but I am saying that his business instincts drove him, tentatively at first and with a hiatus for 'Roy Keane's Ipswich', to increasingly concentrate on cost cutting.

Wasn't sent back after the red card, although I remember Jim calling him a "big lummox" in a press conference. He stayed to the end of the season and was set to sign permanently until Roy decided to look elsewhere for a keeper.

He did a cracking job of looking elsewhere too. Brian Murphy, Plug and Aaran Lee-Barratt all started between the sticks that year. And then we had Begovic too.
