I've joined the cycling scum on 14:08 - Mar 21 by bluelagos | What sort of bike / tyres you got? I wouldn't go on a tow path on a road bike - but would happily go on the road on a mountain bike. You can also get decent tyres that are nearly puncture proof (Gatorskins?) |
It was a second hand 'normal' looking thin framed / tyres thing for 99 quid - in between a racing bike and a mountain one I think, so I'm assuming I should dodge the towpaths!

Sounds like what is called a Hybrid - which should be fine on a towpath. Just make sure you tyres have proper tread on them.

You will be surprised how your endurance will build up with sensible increases in the distance you go (2-3 mile increments). Adding a refreshment stop (coffee and cake for me) certainly helps makes longer rides more enjoyable. The biggest challenge is making sure you vary the routes so you don't get bored with the same scenery.

Those do still puncture on the towpath sometimes because there are gaps in the paving stones and if you hit one the sidewalls of the types don't stand up to it. Hence why I got a cyclocross for the commute. You can use road bikes on the towpath if you are sensible and not too fast though. SB

I've joined the cycling scum on 13:57 - Mar 21 by footers | I don't even trust myself to walk along those towpaths, Pecker old fruit! Especially if a few beverages have been consumed. Oh, and don't get me started on the fckn cyclists on there. |
I have cycled on the towpath alongside the River Orwell in Ipswich before, which I shouldn't have done, what with it being a footpath and technically open to cyclists. However, in a karma moment, trying to give a pedestrian room, since I shouldn't have been there, I cycled off the path and into the river. [Post edited 21 Mar 2020 14:29]

We should keep quiet really. A budgie with a flat tyre having to push it home could be quite funny :-)

Got one of these in grey today. Did a short ride earlier. I’m going to have to find some routes, there is a cycle path Tyne tunnel which should be interesting. What apps do people use for planning routes?

Very nice. I don't tend to bother with apps - just head off and see where I end up or commute to work. I've got one of these which is perfect for the road/towpath combo: Obviously depends how much you are going to cycle though. Got it at a bargain price - sales come round quite frequently in bike shops. SB

I didn’t really want to spend big money, I went to Decathlon this morning and bought that. The Leas along at South Shields are a decent ride. From Shields pier to Sunderland pier is a decent distance. I quite fancy going through the Tyne tunnel (there’s a cycle and pedestrian tunnel) too.

I love decathlon. Got loads of my hiking gear from there - always good value. May not be the top end - but for what most of us do (myself included) absolutely good enough. Wicker tops for £6 when I saw some for £40 in the US.

Nothing wrong with Decathlon bikes - a huge amount of kit for the money. My previous bike was a Triban 500 SE from there and it was very reasonable indeed and served me well for a good few years. SB

Would they do pedals and shoes for a boardman (Halfords) bike?

Not sure, I assume you can get a standard fitting but I've never had to change the pedals. Got mine from Cycle Republic (which is part of the Halfords group). SB

Besides the big names I don’t really know too much about bikes. I am impressed by it though. Aluminium alloy frame, very light compared to bikes I’ve owned previously (some 9 years ago was my last bike). The frame has a lifetime guarantee. I’ve ordered a bottle cage for it. I wore shorts today and it was pretty cold, so might need to rethink my attire!
