Easing of social distancing. on 09:54 - May 2 with 1968 views | r2d2 | Social distancing wont be eased even if we wear masks. The 2 metre rule will stay in place. Boris wont ease it much on Thursday. Be prepared for another 3 weeks lockdown at least.

I expect an announcement, before next weekend that masks must be worn in stores and on public transport. This will lead , from mid May, to more stores being allowed to open, and equally important more people to be in a store at any one time. Not saying it is for the best but what I expect to happen. I read there was no scientific benefit behind the 2m rule and it was an arbitrary figure. 1m metre may be beneficial so I can see social distancing maybe reduced to that. I presume the masks the public will be asked to where will be of lower quality than the standard required by key workers?

Where did you see that? If anything the evidence from modelling I have seen says that 2m probably isn't enough to cover for a cough or sneeze. SB

The lockdown will be eased but social distancing will remain for the foreseeable future. Otherwise there was no logic in having it in the first place. SB

Nowhere in that article does it state the WHO advice is at least 1m. The whole article reads very much like his opinion piece rather than agreed scientific consensus. He clearly wants the lockdown eased for other reasons which he sights and having 1m fits into that goal. Doesn't mean that 1m might not be right, just that article doesn't confirm it. Easing of social distancing. on 11:44 - May 2 with 1805 views | Ryorry | When placing a large online order from an independent nursery & gardeing supplies place in mid-March, I saw they had a 3-pack of gardening dust masks for sale, so got 1 pack @ £12.95. Used one for first time y'day when had to go to GP surgery for blood test - the nurse taking it said that mine was better than the one she'd been given as part of her PPE!

I struggle to copy on paste on my iPad but it says in the article U.K. government advice currently recommends people maintain a distance of two metres, while the World Health Organisation advises staying at least one metre away from others. The argument is there is no scientific basis behind saying two metres, it might as well be three, six, nine or 453. As you say other studies have referred to eight metres which would be nigh on possible, hence the increased debate around masks.

I see the 1m statement on reading again. Still doesn't seem to fit with what most countries are doing although if everyone had a mask maybe it would be ok. However there aren't even though masks for all the medical needs it seems? SB

He's confusing the lockdown with social distancing. I have seen the 2m thing as well but didn't pay much attention to it. At the moment 2m is the closest I want to be to anyone, guidelines or not.

I was wondering that as well - I can only assume that the masks worn by the general public can be of a lesser quality and standard than those required by key workers? Otherwise it strikes me as very irresponsible to be pushing for members of the public to wear them whilst they are desperately needed elsewhere and it’d be good to hear the WHO call out countries over this.

Don't you miss hugging friends tho? Probably the thing I miss most (well that & going out & seeing different people a couple of times a week). In a weird kind of branch-off of that, it's certainly what my dog misses most - he's a great big shaggy teddy-bear in appearance & very good-natured, so complete strangers often ask to pat or stroke him & he really enjoys that. Also misses playing with other dogs. Really hard for them as obviously they don't understand.

I'm a man. I haven't hugged a friend since 1994

Easing of social distancing. on 12:26 - May 2 with 1686 views | J2BLUE | KN95 respirator masks are in stock on Chemist 4 u https://www.chemist-4-u.com/kn95-respirator-face-mask Chinese equivalent of N95 masks. Assuming the manufacturer has made them properly they've been shown to be the same standard as N95 (at least according to the test I read). They have been in stock on that site for ages so I can only assume that ordering some doesn't take them away from front line staff or they'd surely have bought their entire stock each time they had a delivery?

Are you high-risk if you caught it? Otherwise why would you be bothered about catching it? If the alternatives are to not go near anyone for a year for fear of catching it until a vaccine is (hopefully) ready, or to catch it, recover and be immune (hopefully)? Or are you being extra responsible and not wanting to be a risk of spreading it to someone else?

You can't guarantee getting mild symptoms whoever you are or we would probably be deliberately infecting people to get the immune numbers up. On the risk scale i'd say myself and most of my family are about 3/5.

Easing of social distancing. on 13:06 - May 2 with 1617 views | r2d2 | Its a case of after the horse has bolted with masks. We havent been wearing them in supermarkets or chemists etc up to now. Queues of people without them. Was in Boots yesterday getting prescriptions. Rows of people without masks. Hasnt mattered up to now. How it will make much difference l cant see.
Easing of social distancing. on 13:08 - May 2 with 1606 views | r2d2 | Adding to that, even if more shops open who wants to stand in massive queues for ages to go into Primark etc. You have got to be pretty sad if that is what people are going to do.

N95 is a US standard, not sure these masks would meet EU standard for hospital use. You shouldn’t believe they have stock, if you read the full article they say delivery 3-5 working days but later add this figure is given in good faith
