Easing of social distancing. on 10:45 - May 2 by Pinewoodblue
I expect an announcement, before next weekend that masks must be worn in stores and on public transport. This will lead , from mid May, to more stores being allowed to open, and equally important more people to be in a store at any one time.
Not saying it is for the best but what I expect to happen.

I don't think they well say this. One because there will be mass panic buying and profiteering which in turn, I suspect a lot of people would then ignore it.

Nowhere in that article does it state the WHO advice is at least 1m.
The whole article reads very much like his opinion piece rather than agreed scientific consensus. He clearly wants the lockdown eased for other reasons which he sights and having 1m fits into that goal.
Doesn't mean that 1m might not be right, just that article doesn't confirm it.

Ref the 2m rule, I asked a few weeks back what was the basis for it and no one came up with a credible answer. I've also read 1m was the WHO distance but that could be wrong. (Never checked it)
One thing I do understand is that originally the 2m rule was about being close to someone for 15 minutes. (Had that confirmed by a Doctor) That is minutes, not seconds btw.
Which kind of leaves me thinking they have come up with the rule in the absence of anything concrete (indeed - what else can they do?) and that there is a lot of guess work as to what is / isn't safe.

The thing is if you were outside and standing 2 metres behind someone and they coughed or sneezed, with the wind blowing that would travel well over two metres so two metres on its own is not enough.
As you say I think its being that close for a period of minutes with an infected person which is the real issue?

I also don't know where the 2m figure comes from but I have seen various studies saying it's too small. I think it all depends on how much C19 is in the droplets expelled and how easy it is for that to transfer.
I don't think most of the world would have gone for 2m at random though.
This is doesn't prove anything but is quite interesting:

I suspect someone came up with it and it got adopted/copied. If you are the science bod in Spain - and the French have said 2m - you are going to copy them unless you have better info.
My approach - if someone is coughing / sneezing or looks like they have a cold (red nose / eyes) is to not go within yards of them. I would genuinely not enter a shop if the guy in front was sneezing. I'd just wait 5 mins or go elsewhere.
But when someone who isn't coughing / sneezing walks past - I am quite relaxed as I just don't consider being within 2m of someone for all of 3 seconds (as we pass on a street) is a credible risk.
Having said that - we clearly don't know the ins/outs of transmission - so understand why some people are a lot more cautious than me.

If someone is coughing or sneezing they shouldn't actually be out at all, they should be in self isolating. The two metre thing is a bit of psychology. It is to make people feel that something is being done. It is the same as armed police at airports it is to make the public feel safe not to actually stop terrorists.

I don't disagree, albeit there may actually be some science behind it. One thing we can all agree on is that is doesn't do any harm keeping 2m distance. So if it is possible, it is sensible to do so if only not to alarm other people.

What if someone has hayfever?
You are essentially locking them inside for up to 4 months even though they could be fine. I do understand that it can be transmitted by sneezing but it's not a specific symptom of C19.
Perhaps in these cases wearing a mask would be better although not as good as being able to be quickly tested.

I won’t be wearing a mask outside.
And if shops want us to wear one whilst inside, they can supply them at the door. Won’t be spending 1 penny on masks.

Too cool to wear one eh?

My Mrs has terrible hay-fever this time of year. So do millions of other people. Doesnt mean they have the virus.

I dont see the point of a mask, if you're going to sneeze how many people will sneeze into the mask or quickly pull it down and sneeze into a tissue or hand? I think the vast majority will go for pulling the mask down so no different to no mask.
The 2metre rule is also silly we should go with the WHO guideline of 1m

No, I just wear what I want. Plus I don’t want to spend loads of money on masks you have to keep replacing.
And I am the opposite to cool and don’t care what people think of me, what they think is their problem, not mine.

Edgy.
You'll do as you're told. Just like everyone else.

As I said in the first post, I will happily wear a mask if it is supplied to me when I am in a shop etc, but not outside. I will also not spend my own money on them.

Also, if they are that effective, why are supermarket staff etc not wearing them?

Yes but that is the current government policy. Hence the need for testing. Because in the winter it will be cold and flu. My son had a cough for a day and I had to isolate for two weeks.

I overheard a member of staff at a supermarket ranting (quite rightly) about not being allowed to wear a mask.
I think you'll find that is why.
Staff at all the food shops I have been to in France are all wearing masks. That seems to be standard over here and they are going to need to be worn on public transport when restrictions are eased next week. From next Monday, shop workers / owners can refuse access to customers not wearing masks.
The wearing of gloves is more controversial. Some shops insist you wear gloves and others say that increases the risk of spreading infection.

My thoughts are that when we come out of the lockdown, but retain social distancing, using 2m instead of 1m will be a very costly choice. Shops, pubs, bars, restuarants could sustain significantly more customers if we adopted the WHO guidelines.
