Vitamin D and Covid-19 09:31 - May 6 with 2931 views | NotSure | Now my uneducated theory is that respiratory diseases are not as prevalent during the Summer. And apologies, my short form of writing appears to be winding a lot of people up. Again, I repeat, I am not a troll and I just have a theory regarding Covid-19. But maybe it is because we get more Vitamin D during the summer. And maybe the reason more BAME people are dieing is because they need 3 times more exposure to sunlight to get the same amount as Vitamin D as fair skinned people. We should be taking Vitamin D supplements. We should be allowing people to sit in the parks and beaches whilst maintaining social distancing. https://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=3585561 https://www.researchsquare.com/article/rs-21211/v1 https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19063829 So by locking us in our houses are we making the situation worse?

Vitamin D and Covid-19 on 10:19 - May 6 by longtimefan | Under GP instruction I have been taking Vit D3 supplements over Autumn and Winter months for a few years. Apparently it's difficult to build good levels of Vit D from even a very healthy diet and the sun levels through these periods are generally not sufficient either. If you are looking to take Vit D supplements make sure they are Vit D3, many of the cheaper versions aren't. I've continued taking these through Spring this year and will continue to do so while we remain in lockdown. |
I was told to start taking them 3 months ago by my doc as was getting throbbing pains in my legs which blood test highlighted to be vitamin D deficiency. You are correct in all you say and my doctor was adamant they had to be D3. I went for Vitabiotics ultra Vitamin D 1000 IU D3 and no more leg pains.

Vitamin D and Covid-19 on 10:22 - May 6 by StokieBlue | The issue is that no matter how much vitamin D might help with regards to fighting C19 it's still better not to get it in the first place if possible. Hence distancing rules need to be in place even if outside spaces are opened up more. He is against those and wants to have people over to his house. SB |
If social distancing is followed, why is it incorrect to have people over to ones house?

Have you been following anything over the last 3 months? Social distancing helps, it does not prevent. It also only helps with droplet based transmission, it doesn't stop people touching surfaces than you then touch and it is impossible to keep track of and clean all such surfaces. Let's ask you as question now: Why is it so hard to follow the guidelines for a small amount of time in the grand scheme of things and why are people looking for excuses to not follow them? I remain amazed that this Govt. still hasn't disseminated such basic advice. The majority of people in the UK are deficient in Vit D, something I discovered after doing a bit of research in autumn 2018, when a routine blood test showed me to be shockingly low in it, despite having gone around in T-shirt & done plenty of sunbathing during that long hot summer.

"Why is it so hard to follow the guidelines for a small amount of time in the grand scheme of things and why are people looking for excuses to not follow them?" That's the part that's making no sense. Cases have fallen because many people have done very well at maintaining an adult approach to the crisis and treated the situation with the respect it deserves. Whilst others, like the idiot on this and other thread, have been deliberately ignoring guidelines and actively encouraging others to do the same. The lack of consideration for people who have been proven to be in danger from this is telling.

I would be surprised if the majority of people in the UK are deficient in Vitamin D. I believe it's closer to 1/5 - 1/4, rising slightly in the winter. Vitamin D deficiency is particularly prevalent among BAME in the UK though, that's what triggered my thought process that the 2 could be linked given BAME over indexing in being impacted worst by Covid-19. It's speculation of course, and equally you could point at Middle Eastern countries in particular which tend to have high rates of Vitamin D deficiency, but lower death rates from COVID as a counter argument. Although they also have significantly younger populations, so there's a lot of factors at play. In principle I totally agree though, vitamin D is very important.

The un programming will be a lot harder than the programming, the busy bodies are in their element, reporting people sitting in the park, taking number plates of cars visiting coastal towns, to quote a vacuous poster 'the blowhards' are in their absolute element. Without an economy we have nothing, nothing at all, the destruction of the economy is in full swing and the consequences will be catastrophic. This fake lockdown is pointless, one cannot shut a virus away and a hope for a vaccine that may never materialise. Neil Ferguson has a succession of failed predictions to his career, yet his advice is treated as gospel.

That reply seems to imply you've dismissed by science-based answer on why you shouldn't mingle and doesn't seem to answer my subsequent question either. How can a lockdown be fake? Why would a party who pride themselves (rightly or wrongly) on being the masters of the economy want to destroy the economy unless perhaps it was absolutely necessary to stop lots of people dying? The Ferguson point is whatabouterry given lockdowns have been implemented in lots and lots of places that have had no advice from him. SB [Post edited 6 May 2020 13:45]

Well yes, probably unnecessary. I apologise for that. But you are spouting a load of old guff though. Sounds like you're having a rough time with this lockdown. It's easy on nobody. Take care of yourself fella. But like Footers said, if there's no lockdown what are you complaining about? Surely you're just out there merrily doing your thing down the pub/on the swings in the park/looking at the mammoth in Ipswich Museum? [Post edited 6 May 2020 13:55]
