To be fair, a rejection of slavery or the symbols that somehow excuse it as necessary to the Empire and its celebration, isn't "transitory political correctness".
It's basic human decency given the structural racism that still exists and in many respects is a hangover from that past.
History isn't in statues but our values certainly are.
