People who perceive their feelings of deprivation (compared with media portrayals of consumerist prosperity, or with the - imaginary - "good old days") are not getting the same attention as other disadvantaged groups. Then, rather than building alliances with them to fight for universal social justice (which would be the sensible option*), they set out to beat the others down in a pseudo-Darwinian battle for what they erroneously see as a limited resource.
