Should work now, if not, it was a trailer for the forthcoming 'Foundation' telly series, based on Asimov's seminal work.

It'll probably upset some old-skool types because there appears to be actual women and non-white people in it. Frankly, it's even less of an issue in Asimov's work than anyone else's because let's fcace it, we read his work for the ideas and the plotting not the characters, who basically exist to drive the former two things.

That could be great or really bad - certainly worth a watch though.

Amazon were supposed to be working on Consider Phlebas which could be amazing.

I have genuinely no idea how ANYONE could deliver The Culture on screen beyond 'Consider Phlebas' or maybe 'Player of Games' on screen. The ideas in some are HUGE. How would you do 'Excession'? A lot of the plot is driven by the conversations between Minds.

I honestly don't know how you'd portray the mind working groups in Excession on the screen.

I would love to see an adaptation of "Player of Games", a brilliant book. Surface Detail would be possible as well although obviously the battles are hard to portray.

'Use of Weapons' you could probably do quite well, given how well stuff like Game of Thrones with multiple intersecting storylines and The Witcher have gone down.
Although, it's as bleak as f*ck.

Speaking of 'bleak as f*ck' I'd love to see 'Against A Dark Background' worked in somehow.

Yes- but also done by someone who really gets it, and isnt trying to make it too commercial. Which is generally problematic, though Amazon / Netflix seem to be making that sort of thing more feasible than it ever was in Hollywood- going by examples like The Expanse and Altered Carbon.

In all fairness, the 'Foundation' books are, a bit of window dressing aside, largely a series of blokes talking in rooms about stuff happening elsewhere. You probably need to add a bit of 'jazz it up' to bring them to the screen.

Probably true.

So- dont make a film of it. I have visions of I-Robot.

I still get upset at the stupid stuff in LOTR. Dwarf tossing indeed. Surfing on a shield FFS. Hollywood crap.

Let's be fair here, the LOTR films are a massive improvement on the book.
The book is a hideous po-faced slog. I even read it twice to make sure I hadn't made a mistake about that.

Don't even get me started on all the bloody singing. I get that the legacy of the book is huge, massive influence, etc, etc but it's a bit like Lovecraft(without Howard Lovecraft's other dodgy associations, let's be clear on THAT) for me, the style of the book is just so ponderous that it it detracts.

And they are just generally good films.

Now The Hobbit trilogy on the other hand, no idea what they were thinking. Started off decent enough they went rapidly down hill.
