Never knew this and couldn't believe it when I just saw it.
Would have taken me about 10 guesses.
For those that know the answer, anyone know the story behind it? I mean I know he was good and I know what he did that season but strikes me there were plenty of others who would get the vote ahead of him if that season were to happen now.
Was it voted for in January or something? How can Warky get 36 goals, break a European record and lose out!

Yep.
Strange that Wark was the best player in England but not at ITFC!
Goalkeepers often seem to punch above their weight where fans have a vote. Bart was awful for most of the 2018-19 season, but he was I think our top rated player on the basis of the on line TWTD player rating system.

TWTD player rating system - might as well be a random number generator.

I think Cooper had saved 8 out of the last 10 penalties he'd faced some time around then. Cracking keeper, but I agree, had to be John Wark that season.

7 from 11 I always thought.
Cooper was superb that season no doubt. But the strange thing is that so were the rest of the team on our way to arguably being the best side in Europe.
Just strange that Wark got 36 goals from midfield and lost out to our keeper.

It was 7 from 9 in 1979/80.
Cooper was outstanding in 80/81. He had a brilliant game in Amsterdam, without him we'd have lost the final.

Think he was behind Joe Corrigan for the 3rd England spot. Corrigan was average at best. Cooper was by far better than him at that time.
Our only first 11 player that wasn’t capped by his country , and possibly one of the reasons he got it , a share of the spoils in a glorious year for the team and club .

The top 3 were all Town players. Those really were the days and this video brings back great memories for me.

My word, three players from Town taking up the top three spots. I have watched Town from around 1975 onwards. I was spoilt. Spoilt rotten. Marcus should watch those six minutes and realise what we have been and what he has helped us become.

I did know this and I’m not surprised. Paul Cooper was a great character and had a wonderful rapport with the fans. The supporters seemed to have a closer affinity with the players back then.

Remember as a kid being at the very front of Churchmans behind the goal, and it raing chewing gum and sweets during warm up. Cooper would gather up those that had actually reached the goal area and hand them over to the ball boys, who would then hand them out to the crowd. That and the smell of linament! Happy days indeed..

I was a big fan of super Coopor than too. However, Clough used to say that if we had bought Shilton off Forest then we would have won the league.
