Huws as a centre back? 16:11 - Aug 25 with 1868 viewsFransandArnie

Although Nsiala and Donacien were ok today and Chambers was his consistent self, they obviously cannot play out from the back as the ball looks like a hot potato at their feet. Therefore, (assuming Pep Lambert continues to encourage this style) only Woolfenden and Ndaba look capable of picking a pass.
Hopefully, we will continue with Bishop, Downes, and Dozzell in midfield until injuries intervene, therefore freeing up Huws to move to Centre Back? I’m a dreamer...Notable that we were only competitive for 44 mins against WHU when the youngsters were in midfield playing progressive balls.

Not Huws, Skuse played there a bit last season and could be an option though

It would be a miracle if Huws lasted more than 5 minutes given his injury history, so I'm not sure sticking him up against 6'3 battering rams is likely to do him much good.

Anyone remember which game it was in which Skuse played right back in a 4-3-3? That was entertaining.

Against his old side Bristol City.

And no, entertaining was not the word I would have used.

Skuse can play CB if needed.

Huws is an attacking midfielder. If he is fit we need to see more of what he offered for our goal today. What we cannot afford is him with no bite in the midfield alongside him.

Yes, that’s a very valid reason against the idea. Skuse is the only other option, as reads the game well but short on physicality in that position. We’ll have to hope that the player next to Luke (assuming he stays) knows their limitations, although difficult if Lambert is shouting instructions that they don’t have the skill to employ.

Let's play Bishop there, he can play the ball and has the ability to carry it out from the back. He's not short either. Job done.

As Chambers isn’t good at playing it out from the back, surely
to goodness he should be further up the pitch - striker?

I actually like this suggestion FransandArnie, but just can't see it happening - it's too left field for us. However, he's got many attributes that we're lacking at CB and lets not forget he's a big unit, so would be a physical presence along with his footballing ability. An arrow up for thinking outside the box!

Think you're thinking of Bristol Rovers last season. Skuse played most of his early games with Bristol City as a right-back. Has had a couple of games at centre-half for us, Sheffield United away at the end of the relegation season was the first, if I remember rightly.

Did Skuse play CB a couple of seasons back against Derby, which was covered on TalkSport?

I seem to recall they were full of praise for him at the time.

While at least Huws was fit enough to play about half of the league games last season, he was either playing to orders or was a shadow of the player he used to be. He could be more of a defensive midfield option. I'd love to see Town use the midfield 3 of Downes, Dozzell & Bishop but the problem with that is we don't have the defenders to play it out from the back & if a match descends into a duel of hoofs & winning "2nd balls", we would be overwhelmed.

You are right, Phil. It was Rovers not City. I got free tickets for and found that I was sat alongside a friend who is a Bristol City fan. It took us a while to work out what was going on but Skuse was definitely playing right back for us and it did not work.

He's certainly not droppable for Emyr Huws.
