Favourite England Cricket Team from players you've seen (live or TV) 19:32 - Aug 25 with 6016 viewsKeno

inspired by Andersons achievement what would your lifetime Favourite England Cricket Team be?

mine

Strauss
Cook
Graham Thorpe
Root
Derek Randall
Ian Botham
Alan Knott
Broad
Bob Willis
Anderson
Derek Underwood

Struggled over the No 3 spot could have gone Atherton, or moved Root up and gone Peiterson
For the keeper Ive gone with the best keeper, but if I wanted a keeper/batsman I would have gone Buttler or Geraint Jones as a compromise

All rounder Flintoff, Stokes or Botham was a tough one to!!

Within my lifetime of watching cricket 1990-present
Gooch
Atherton
Robin Smith
Ian Bell
Peitersen
Stokes
Jack Russell
Stuart Broad
Darren Gough
Jimmy Anderson
Phil Tufnell

Athers gets the opening slot for me, with Gooch who was the man when I first got into cricket. His 333 is my earliest cricketing memory.
Robin Smith was a superb and underrated player, when the West Indies ruled and chin music was playing all the time he could tough it out but also play elegant shots
Ian Bell is the closest we have had since Gower in terms of playing beautiful classic shots, brilliant elegant technique with more discipline than Gower.
Pietersen on form was a class apart from everyone, nobody had batted like that for England in a Test team before, playing like it was a one-day match and smacking it all over the place from the off.
Stokes edges it over Freddie (Botham was at the end when I watched him) because outside of Ashes 2005 Freddie didn't do much else, Stokes before the events of last summer posted this innings, one of the very best I've ever seen
Jack Russell because the was the best wicketkeeper and the last wicketkeeper. Since he got edged out for Alec Stewart the Keeper's job has gone to the best batsman who can do a job behind the stumps. James Foster and now it seems Ben Foakes won't get their chance.
Broad because he's delivered the most exciting bowling spells I've ever seen.
Darren Gough to be paceman, I was thinking about Simon Jones, Hoggard or Caddick but Gough in his prime did what they could go and more, plus I need to get one Yorkshireman in
Jimmy obviously
Tuffers, he was a lot better bowler than people give him credit for. He used to give the ball a proper rip .

Hutton (Capt)
Hobbs
May
DCS Compton
Gower
Botham
Knott
Laker
Bedser
Trueman
Anderson

I'm old, but I didn't see Jack Hobbs play cricket, but when I was a child my parents took me into his shop in Fleet Street, so that I could say I'd seen the great man. So I've seen him live.

Thomson and Lillee finally gave up sledging Randall after Thommo had given him a mouthful of choice language and Derek just said 'Enjoyed your sermon last Sunday, Vicar.'
Randall in his later days played for Suffolk.

I liked those last 3 but can't get over the fact Devon is remembered for his lack of control (that spell against Saffers after being bounced was the exception rather than the rule) and Tuffers for his fielding (I recall the sign in the crowd in Australia that read "chuck us the ball Tuffers we will throw it in for you"). I liked De Freitas too but he was not that good was he?

Not quite as good as, “oi Tuffnell, lend us your brain, we’re building an idiot”.

Nice for a Somerset native and member of Somerset CCC to see Marcus Trescothick appear in so many teams. Andrew Flintoff has always said that in his view Marcus was the best batsman he ever played with.

Such a good man too. He was one of the first sportsmen who opened up about his mental difficulties, and has helped others with similar problems.

Thompson tried to wind him up, but Randall got the better of him in the verbals, making the Aussie fielders laugh rather a lot. Thommo lost it and a couple of lose balls ended up in the pavilion!!

If I was putting a world 11 together it would have to include David Boon, not sure if its apocryphal but one of the Aussie commentators was reported as delivering the line "and there is the short backward square David Boon, fielding at short leg"

A team of cricketing drinkers would have Boon as skipper.

I'd be tempted to swap Tres and Strauss in your side, simply because Trescothick usually would be our 'get the team off to a flyer' opener. Cook could compliment him by being solid and of the three, I know Strauss batted three for Middlesex a fair bit.

That side would dominate world cricket imo.

No, that one was James Ormond, making his Test bow against Australia in 2001. He groped nervously at the first couple of deliveries & Mark Waugh guffawed "You're not good enough to play Test cricket".
Ormond retorted "That's as may be, but at least I know I'm the best player in my family".
Ormond only played one more Test.

Difficult, but off the top of my head:

Strauss
Cook
Vaughan
Pietersen
Root
Prior
Flintoff
Stokes
Swann
Broad
Anderson

Was very off the cuff featuring players who immediately sprang to mind.

Possibly a bowler light at the expense of having two all-rounders - and that's not including Botham. How do you choose between him, Stokes and Flintoff? All three find a way to affect the game.

Could also have possibly tried to find room for the on-form version of Harmison who was genuinely world-class when it all came together, and also the injury-free version of Jones who showed he could have been as good as anyone had he not been plagued by injuries.

I had them the other way round then changed them at the last moment. I had Vaughan in there too at one point but then couldn't choose between Cook and Strauss.

I've got a Len Hutton bat, not one that he used but one of these. My local Cricket club got a new pavilion in the 90s and the old one got knocked down and there was a load of old bats, pads and gloves that were all going to get chucked and I kept this bat which was in the skip which looks like this

Len Hutton was my Grandad's favourite player. He played cricket for Barnsley at the same time Dickie Bird and Michael Parkinson were playing and Boycott coming through. I really like Sir Geoffery but my grandad hated him, my Grandad was proper Yorkshire cricket. At the time you could only play for Yorkshire if you were born in the county , he said to my mum as few times get up here for the birth but I dropped a week early so I was born in Sudbury instead of Sheffield.

Tres hated not opening the innings. He even hated not facing the first ball.
