Sunak set to cut aid budget 14:26 - Aug 31 with 7175 views | tractordownsouth | As well as being cutting off support for the most vulnerable, this is going to be the next round of the culture war isn't it? The Tories will claim Labour are out of touch by wanting to help poverty abroad rather than at home, even though it's more than possible to care about both. Foreign Aid is a percentage not a set cash figure anyway, so our contribution will go down as our GDP has gone down, so it's not a case of prioritising foreigners over people living here. The people shouting "we should help our own first" are the same ones who otherwise accuse anyone who wants to do that of being a leftie loon. Won't link the article because it's The Sun but it's on Twitter too

Sunak set to cut aid budget on 17:36 - Aug 31 by bluelagos | "what value can we add economically to developing nations? " Shed loads mate. The programme I saw up close in Malawi was targeting literacy levels of young girls. Our education sector has a lot it can share in the developing world. Have also seen Water and sanitation programmes (Wells and latrines) which benefit from engineering projects, medical programmes that benefit from medical skills. Have also seen in Kenya water harvestation supported by a British charity that exports the technology of sand dams globally. I could go on and on - and I only only worked for around 2 years for INGOs. DFID genuinely are (or were given they no longer exist) regarded as one of the world's best development teams / donors. I'd echo that having worked on several overseas development projects in Asia and South America. Yes there's politics behind it all, but also yes the money brings real benefits to people. The politics today is more about our relationship with other donors and our global standing, rather than the relationship with the recipient nations. With much of what goes on now being multilateral, and hs been for some years now). I wouldn't be at all surprised if the real drive behind the new populist conservatism is to pull out of these multilateral agreements (where we can't control the money flows so much) in order to direct what funding we do provide through the Government's pals. Much as we saw with the shambolic PPE contracts. This brand of conservatism doesn't want to be accountable in collaborative programmes - they just seem to want to feather their own nests and those of their friends and backers.

I don't mind people getting at me. What annoys me is the abuse they seem to be able to dish out, yet any comment you, me or others make gets shot down in flames. But that's alright. Couple of Tories have spoken out in defense of maintaining the 0.7% GDP commitment - Andrew Mitchell and Tobias Ellwood the most high profile.

I had a vote. Voted Labour. The Tories won and were going to let kids go hungry over the summer. Now what? It took the intervention of a popular England player to change opinion anjd force the government to change their mind. So tell me, the Indian family who voted against their current government and voted for a party who would take better care of the Indian people are now going hungry and without basis healthcare. Is it still their fault? Is it the fault of the Indian cricket team for not having a player step up and demand chance? I would genuinely like to know who is to blame in this situation. Please inform me.

I’m not sure who’s to blame, but I’ll tell you who isn’t. The British taxpayer. As I’ve said earlier, it’s not our responsibility to lift all the world’s poor out of poverty.

Is it the responsibility of the British taxpayer to lift our own poor out of poverty? We're not doing a great job. You realise if everyone had your attitude not only would some people be going without food but food banks wouldn't exist either? They would starve to death because it's not our problem. Why help some humans who happened to be born on the same little island we were and not other humans? Surely the very least we should be doing is ensuring people don't go hungry whatever they look like and wherever they are from?

In an ideal world, yes, of course it would be lovely to help everyone. We can’t do that, it’s the way nation states work. A small island of 30 or 40 million tax payers cannot foot the bill to alleviate poverty in a nation of 1 billion people. It’s just not a sustainable proposition. I know it’s not just the UK, I know a number of ‘developed’ countries are doing similar things but the sheer numbers will at some point become unfeasible. Population growth in developing countries is far outstripping economic growth in the west. The numbers do not add up.

The problem with the anti-foreign aid arguments is they overlook how stabilising underdeveloped nations is in our interests, even if we didn't give a sh1t about their people. Poor countries attract trouble and become targets for ruthless exploitation. In turn we wonder why this trouble can show up at our door. Victims of disruption in these places often have nowhere to go, and we again wonder why they turn up at our door. It's in everyone's interests for people to become self-sufficient and safe; be it through helping provide the basics like food and water, to education and supporting industrial growth. This isn't hard.

But we aren't alone. We have the US, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and many other countries with a bit of wealth. It's not all on us. I realise right now the US are unlikely to help but Trump won't be there forever. We can find money to drop bombs but we can't drop some aid? We can't provide food? We already grow enough food to feed the world. We just choose to waste it feeding it to animals which we then eat. We could help the planet and the people by eating more plants and less animals. Christ i've gone full Callis tonight.

In addition to it being in our interest, I also think we have a responsibility given our historical role in looting countries' resources. And I'd add if we believe we are all equal, why would anyone think we should only help people who happen to be born on our Island. Lastly, the environmental emergency requires development that is more than industrial. We can help influence the developing world in an environmentally sustainable way, or ignore how they develop and pay the price through a worsening environment / climate change.

As an aside I don’t really understand the phrase “The numbers do not add up” Of all the things that should add up, it should be numbers. Even as a pure mathematician back in the day, who had no real desire to do anything verging on the practical, lest it was mistaken for engineering, the one thing you could really respect numbers for was their ability to be added up. I have a sneaky feeling it is just a trite phrase people use, when the don’t actually want to be doing any adding up, or more likely long division, and want to sound like they actually know something. But don’t.

I'm not sure you understand what the foreign aid budget is spent on. You seem to think it's sacks of rice or something. The UK foreign aid budget is spent, mainly, on business initiatives in emerging economies, it's not throwing money down the drain. But as others have said, even it was to feed the world's poor it'd still be money well spent.

I've made the mistake of reading the comments underneath the MSN articles lately and got into arguments there. Anything that so much as mentions a crime, let alone immigration, or indeed anything remotely foreign, and they are there with the knives out. Some vile comments on there pretty much every day. And I mean vile. There's often hardly a scrap of humanity, let alone any consideration of equality. I'd like to think it's not as common as it looks because, on inspection, it does appear to be the same handful of trash regularly saying the same things, but the amount of 'likes' is horrible.
