Anyone tried to book a coronavirus test recently? 08:51 - Sep 11 with 6411 viewsthebooks

No drive-in or walk-in sites available. Website doesn't work properly and calling for an appointment just results in a "we're busy call back later".

Fücking shambles. Means we have to isolate as a family until the posted test arrives, we send it back and they return the results. How's that meant to help get everyone back to work and the kids to school?

Problem is while a negative test will give them the reassurance they seek it only lasts a couple of days they then begin to worry even more than they did before.

An American friend is paying for a test every week.

Unfortunately the great unwashed don’t see that

Guess you were a conservative voter then, or just believe the latest lies and rhetoric from this shambles of a Government, just like the 10 million tests a day we are going to be carrying out, come on do you really believe this, it's just lies

Universities going back will make an enormous difference as well - the problem there will be that the SERCO centres will basically be wherever they could rent a car park for a decent price, but the vast majority of university students won't have access to their own transport and won't be dead keen on e.g. taking a taxi 10 miles to the out of town exhibition centre or whatever.

You’ll probably find that the university’s will pay for student tests to be done internally.

That is what the colleges are doing at Cambridge and yes I do know that for a fact as I have a family member who works for the university

Not sure that blaming the public stacks up, that's just a line from Matt Hancock that you're repeating isn't it?

Because the advice is to have them as part of the ‘get back to work m’ campaign, unbelievably (or not so unbelievable given how poor this govt is).

Obviously that was last Thursday, which would have been around the first day kids went back to school. The situation is very different now.

And I'm very glad you found self-isolating over a weekend an “inconvenience”. However, I'm talking about my kids missing more school after missing nearly five months, and the effect longer delays than what you experienced will have on people’s work situation. So really no need to imply I’m whinging, thanks.

Not sure he was implying anything mate. Think he was just recounting his experience of getting a test on a thread discussing the ease (Or otherwise) of obtaining tests ...

Because easing restrictions and kids going back to school will result in 1) more actual infections and 2) more symptoms which are probably down to colds and “normal” viruses spreading.

These are not “unnecessary” tests because you should get a test if you show any symptoms. The alternative is to just let it spread again.

It’s right that kids went back and restrictions have been eased, but that has to be backed up by quick testing and track and trace, and it’s currently impossible to get a test in Ipswich or order a home test.

Without quick tests kids stay out of school and parents have to either work from home, or go in to work when infected.

Nah, the dude didn't read the post properly and wanted to imply people should be putting up with the same minor inconvenience he did last weekend.

Or maybe it’s the people who went on holiday to areas where they were supposed to isolate on return and they didnt!

How many people were so desperate for a holiday that they decided to book the last 2 weeks of the school holidays and then complain that they were being asked to quarantine for 2 weeks? It’s no coincidence that the explosion in cases has coincided with the end of the summer holidays!

I don’t understand why you won’t accept the fact that 8.9 million kids returning to school over a period of a few days wouldn't be a fairly obvious cause in the number of test increases, rather than people returning from foreign holidays and refusing to quarantine!?

I guess you're trying to argue any increase in tests/infections is the fault of the public, rather than policy?

What I'm saying is any easing of restrictions, especially returning to school (which is absolutely the right thing to do), will result in an increase in both, and that's inevitable. Where the govt. has messed up is in organising sufficient testing to support returning to school and work.

I still can't book any form of test, incidentally.

May I suggest you are unable to book a test as you don’t fit any criteria to justify testing.

If you had a test today and found out you were clear how would that help you in ten days time. Would you worry people for another test.

Given that schools have only been back for a week but the testing problem seems to have been rumbling on for longer then your arguement doesn’t stack up, likewise with the higher number of positive test results given that the spike started on Sunday which would mean people who were tested on Friday or Saturday last week (again a day or 2 maximum after the kids went back to school).
You do realise that there have been well documented cases of people not isolating when returning from holiday don’t you?

You can suggest that, but you'd be worng.

I can't book a test because none are available.

I'm trying to book on behalf of my wife (a keyworker) and daughter, who have exhibited symptoms. They therefore fit the criteria. The website simply asks whether you have any of three symptoms. It would stop the process if you chose "no" at this point.

If they were clear we wouldn't have to isolate, which would mean my children could return to school immediately.

You mention your daughter and wife who “have exhibited symptoms” from that one would assume they aren’t currently exhibiting symptoms? Therefore the likelihood is that they might not have it.

How long ago did they have the symptoms?

My daughter is coughing at this very moment.

Mate, they have symptoms! I'm pretty sure my daughter has picked up a cold going back to school and doesn't have coronavirus, but, as per (correct) government advice, we need to test to be sure just so we don't spread the virus if she has got it.

I'm sure this isn't uncommon and was predictable considering around 9m kids have returned to school at around the same time.

We should be able to get a test quickly so i) we don't spread the virus and ii) the kids can get back to school as soon as possible.

You've made yourself perfectly clear so I don't know why people are bending over backwards to complicate what sounds a valid complaint.

Family members have symptoms and you want them tested so informed choices can be made.

Fully understandable as things stand.

Blimey you don't know this guy and his family but you and another poster are certain they don't need a test because of how you chose to interpretate his words. His child NEEDS a test, she's eligable.

I was in the same situation, my child had symptoms after going back to school and school guidelines mean he'd be unable to go back until he either had a negative test or had self-isolated for 2 weeks. Luckily I finally managed to get an appointment and now waiting for the results. I'm sure it's just a cold but with the school understandably being ultra careful coupled with my elderly in-laws looking after him twice a week I feel I've done the right and responsible thing getting him tested.

I did a test a few a couple of days ago having been invited by COVID study app that I fill in each day. The study group did state that tests were being limited by the government to certain groups, i.e. keyworkers but they had an arrangement where study participants were exempt from any qualifying criteria.

The first time I tried to request a home kit the website said none were available but when I tried again the next morning I was able to order a home kit which came the next day.

Oh, and some schools who got kits were sent without instructions of use. How incompetent. Although, you can get them online. The more recent kits do have the bonus of printed instructions.

If people need tests they need tests 🤷🏻‍♂️. I find it hard to believe there's been a rush of curious testsers and I don't accept it's the public's fault. If you need clearance that's probably because you'll have no income if you don't have it.

The schools return was always going generate loads of tests because the symptoms are cold like and you're suddenly throwing several thousand people together. The infection rate may well be low, but that doesn't mean testing will also be low.

This useless government is simply unable to do anything that requires mass co-ordination and planning.

100% agree with this post.

My 6 year old daughter went back to school and she had a ‘cold’ within a few days of being back. Quite a few other kids have been off with tummy troubles as well. Apparently these are possible Covid symptoms in children?!

The school cancelled reception at the last minute on Friday as the teacher had Covid symptoms - she was waiting to get a test result.

I now have cold symptoms and my partner has been coughing constantly for almost 2 days (I have no cough!). I tried all day long yesterday to get a test, but not even a sniff of one.

What do we do now? Should I send our daughter to school? Should we all isolate? I have a hospital appointment on Tuesday morning - should I cancel that?

The government knew this was coming and have been telling us to get a test if we have symptoms!! Has there ever been such an inept bunch of politicians in charge of government??

Your partner's cough is a symptom, although that of course doesn't mean they have coronavirus, so they should definitely get tested.

Kids and families always get colds when the schools go back; unfortunately, cold symptoms can share some similarities with coronavirus symptoms.

We faced the same problem. The kids have just been off school for more than five months, another two weeks is the last thing they need. Luckily my wife and I can work from home, but we also don't want to be stuck in the house for two weeks.

Unfortunately, you will have to isolate for two weeks unless anyone with symptoms gets tested and a negative result. I'd phone the hospital and see what they say.

But keep trying. It took my wife and one and a half solid days on the site. At first we were offered Ramsgate(!) but Harwich eventually turned up yesterday. I am assuming you can drive — god knows what people without a car do.

A couple of posters on here said that new tests go on the site at 8am and midday, although we got ours at around 11am, so keep trying! And open a separate browser window to check whether any postal kits turn up.

Finally, ignore anyone on here who tries to argue you're somehow not eligible for a test, or that they were easily able to get a test (they may well have, but that was before the schools went back). There's even some dude who's obsessed with arguing that it's nothing to do with schools going back, and another who wished a quiet and painless death should we get a positive test 🤷🏻‍♂️

Good luck!

Not sure where you live but if if you look at the infection numbers per 100k for anywhere in Suffolk/Cambs then you’ll see they are incredibly low, the ones who are taking all the testing capacity/slots are the ones with no symptoms or even any real reason to need to take a test other than curiosity or needing a negative test result to prove they are clear for some reason.

The testing system is set up for people who genuinely think they may be infected not those people booking slots to give themselves clearance

I don't see what your evidence is for this. The government have been telling everyone to get a test for months with the public assuming there was capacity.

Now cases are on the up, the economy has been mostly reopened and they have been told to get tests, the clearly shambolic system is again not up to it.

I’m 99.9% certain that we only have colds, we’re both quite snotty (plus I had suspected Covid in March and what I had then felt very different to what I have now! Oh, and I had 0% chance of getting a test then as I didn’t go to hospital. I still have issues from then - that’s actually why I’m going to hospital on Tuesday), but like you say, she has classic symptoms - a new and continuous cough. She really should get a test.

We too can and are working from home, so that isn’t really an issue, it’s more about my daughter and whether she should to school and whether we can go shopping etc.

I’m still trying to get a test booked and still no luck! What a mess and it’s only going to get worse as numbers are increasing every day.

My dad lives in Spain and, speaking to him yesterday, he says that kids are going to school every other day so they only have half the children in at one time - much better idea!
