I’ve been asked to a COVID test 08:59 - Sep 16 with 2258 viewsPinewoodblue

Sometime ago I thought it would be the right thing to volunteer to take part in a research programmer for COVID-19.

I currently have a typical autumn cold and logged this on a weekly health check I do .

They have ask me to do a test, and this has been agreed with the Department of Health. I have instructions to lie on the test application. I have to say I am an essential worker, with a 74th birthday later this week. If I don’t the system will reject my request. Not a good start.

Just completed the online request apparently their system couldn’t find any test centres.

Oh th4 joys of outsourcing to profit makin* companies.

Assuming that you are in Pinewood, then you will not only be within coughing distance of your closest test site but actually within the same parish.

And they still couldn't find a test centre.

Unbelievable Jeff.

Probably no more than 300 yards away as the crow flies. Think it is actually in the parish of Sproughton, daft as that might seem.

It says cannot find test site when their isn’t any capacity by all accounts. You have to keep re submitting the form over and and over again and waste hours doing it until it might find availability.
Absolute joke as I was sitting in the pc world/curry’s car Park waiting half an hour for some one to come out and didn’t see one person enter the test site.

Ah yes, so it is, the entrance is in Pinewood, but the actual park and ride site is in Sproughton.

They changed to signage recently. Signs from Tesco roundabout direct you down to A12/ A14 junction then through the retail park, presumably so the traffic queueing for the test centre doesn’t interrupt traffic flow to Tesco, Currys etc.

Ok, I see two obvious problems here.

1) You have said yourself you have a 'typical autumn cold' so why have you been asked to take a Covid test when presumably you don't have Covid symptoms'

2) "I have instructions to lie on the test application" This is a little concerning, who is issuing you the instructions to lie? It's not going to amount to very good research if the dat is flawed is it.

1) I have COVID symptoms but so do most people with a common cold. The research is to try and better identify symptoms. Had I not volunteered I wouldn’t have considered trying to get test.

2) will copy extracts from email I received.

“As you know, we have developed a software test (an algorithm) to predict COVID-19. To validate this, King's College London are now running the clinical study that you joined, and the Department of Health and Social Care has agreed to give you access to a COVID-19 test. This testing process is run by the Department of Health, and no data will come to us until you choose to share it.”

“ You will be asked to confirm you are an essential worker as part of the booking process. We have agreed with DHSC that you can access testing for the purposes of this research, so please select ‘I have coronavirus symptoms (I'm an essential worker)’ when you reach the relevant screen. Please, indicate in the next screen whether or not you have one of the coronavirus symptoms listed in there”

You would have thought that as part of the online booking process you would be required to confirm involvement in the test and be required to enter some sort of reference to validate it.

I have to give KCL authority to access my results so results will not be flawed.

"You would have thought that as part of the online booking process you would be required to confirm involvement in the test and be required to enter some sort of reference to validate it."

Whilst this is a good idea, they'd actually need to develop a system to do that, and would also no doubt require some external validation that the reference they are putting in is correct. So whilst on the face of it it seems simple, the reality is that's actually a decent amount of work.

Given they can't even get it working as it is, I imagine their focus on fixing it first. This was probably just a workaround suggested by the Government.

Kings College London, well if Prof Neil Ferguson has anything to do with it then say no more. He seems to specialise in creating misleading data.

As for the symptoms, yes there is crossover but there are also some key differences.

Fever, continuous dry cough, shortness of breath, loss of taste/smell are all Covid symptoms but are not often seen with a common cold.

A runny nose and sneezing are common cold symptoms but are rarely if ever seen with Covid. There is a useful chart on the below link.

You would like to think so but if they are asking people with cold symptoms to get a test then perhaps not.

You'd need an understanding of what their survey aims and design are before making such claims.

Thanks for the explanation Dan.

It is currently not recognizing any post code so effectively not working at all. I was earlier offered a test at a mobile testing unit in Eye but rejected it.

I suppose it depends how good your math's are to make that statement, interpretation of "average" and "6" seem quite simplybut who knows, but then again this comes from someone who just can't tell how many tested there have been, are sending people all over the country to get a test to keep the numbers down and of course don't forget the "world beating track and trace system by the end of June" that isn't even ready yet plus the "oven ready" Brexit deal that was an amazing deal for the country that suddenly isn't
