Didn't know it was a musical and they're normally something I'd avoid... but OMG... it is absolutely incredible.

I didn't even realise it was the play just filmed, rather than a regular movie. But once I got over that I was blown away.

Firstly, I'm shocked that I'd never heard of Alexander Hamilton, particularly as I have an A-Level in History, but it was a fascinating story. What made it great, though, was the music/lyrics. Kind of like a cross between Eminem and Plan B, it wasn't anything like how I understand musicals. How on earth the cast remember so many quickfire lyrics, along with the dance moves and acting, plus with a few of them playing several roles, was just mindboggling.

We were utterly hooked for the entire 2 hrs 40 mins and by the end the missus had tears streaming down her face and even I had a solitary tear trickling down my left cheek. And I never cry at stuff.

It's also very funny in places too. And very very cleverly done with all the set changes, moving stage, interplaying words and music, much of it at 100mph. Breathtaking.

I found out afterwards the lead actor also wrote the whole thing. Genius. Pure and simple.

I would recommend Hamilton to everyone and would love to see it in a theatre now if it's that incredible on TV. I'm not surprised it's sold out and tickets go for more than £100. Worth every penny I'd say.

If you don't have Disney+ then find another way to get it. A must see.

I bet Bloots will downarrow this.

I, with a few exceptions, hate musicals. My wife likes them, my daughter loves them. As such we have had Hamilton on quite a lot. It is not one of my exceptions.

Sounds like I'm a bit older than you as I did my A-Levels in the 90's. But regardless, I found it astonishing I hadn't even heard of such an important figure.

It's funny to me seeing you and Herbs both saying you hate musicals so will be swerving it, as I would've been the same as you had the missus not tricked me into watching it (by failing to mention it's a musical). She said it was supposed to be really good - so good our mate has been to see it 8 times in the theatre. So I thought, ok I'll give it a go. The missus also agreed to watch something I want to watch tonight, so once I said yes I was locked in!

I'm as stunned as anyone that I enjoyed it. I guess the lesson is to put ones prejudices to one side. I appreciate that probably won't be enough for you guys.

Hope your missus doesn't feel equally tricked when she discovers Match of the Day isn't a dating show...

As someone with no interest in musicals, why would I notice any hype in them?

I was aware of the title, and that it was on in a theatre in the West End. That's it.

I’ve got no interest in musicals either but there’s been a whole load of hype about this one from when it first opened in the US.

Yeah, it's absolutely outstanding. Lin-Manuel Miranda is unbelievable. Appreciate that it is not going to be for everyone but I'm with you Dolly.

Kids watch that bloody film non-stop.

Far too full of its own cleverness for me.

You clearly didn’t do maths.

If Vapour did his a-levels in the 80s and you did yours in the 90s, that probably makes you younger than him. Not older.

Yeah I meant to write "you're a bit older than me," I was even thinking it just before I wrote it, but I was half watching something on Netflix about ages of voters in America and that's what came out.

Nothing to do with my maths abilities, which coincidentally are sh!t.

I can't abide them either. Genuinely, you're missing out.

I'm utterly stunned anyone can watch half and not like it. Not just because it's utterly brilliant, but if you really don't like it why would you watch for more than an hour?

Half is about an hour and twenty minutes. Maybe she only watched an hour, either way she wasn't sold. A few other people I know have also said they don't get what the fuss is about. Think it's probably a bit of a Marmite thing.

An hour or and hour and twenty (I said "more than an hour") - either way, it's a long time to watch something you don't like. After 10 minutes you know what you're gonna get for pretty much the rest of the show.

I'm not an expert on these things, but to me the choreography, the lyricisms and the way they're delivered, the clever interplay etc. was astonishing. I can understand people have different tastes but to say "I don't get what the fuss is about" after seeing that just baffles me. Even if I didn't like the songs I can appreciate the skill and extraordinary amount of practice required to pull all that off so seamlessly.

Still, each to their own.

It's absolutely superb.

Even though Lin-Manuel Miranda wrote it, apparently some other actors have played the part even better than he did.

There are quite a few historical liberties taken with his story but it also highlights some of the very important things done during the foundation of the US.

As for learning about it at A-Level, yours must have been much more varied than mine if it encompassed more than one century of European history in detail!

I wish i hadn't mentioned my History A-Level! I was more making a point that as someone with an interest in history, I'm surprised I'd never even heard the name. He seems to have been quite an important figure.

Glad there's at least 3 of us who like it. I didn't think this thread - just a simple review of something I unexpectedly liked and thought I'd recommend - would be so controversial!

"He seems to have been quite an important figure."

Quite the understatement, he's one of the signees of the Declaration of Independence and thus a founding father of the US. He was basically in charge of the economics.

The thing is there is so much history it's impossible to know it all, I suspect very few Americans could tell you much about the reign of Henry VIII.

Glad you enjoyed the musical, it's so unusual in format and style that I can see the appeal for people who don't usually like musicals.

I appreciate the skill and dedication it takes for a synchronised swimming team to pull off their routine, it doesn't mean I want to watch it or will rave about it afterwards. As I say, seems to be a Marmite thing where people either love it, as you do, or are left pretty cold by it.

Not asking people to rave about it, just think saying "I don't see what the fuss is about" is overly dismissive. Even if it's not your thing you can see why others would like it surely?
