Alton water - unlike lockdown 1, has left it's car parks open allowing you to access the paths round the reservoir.

Details below:
----------------
Following further guidance, unfortunately fishing boat hire and water sports including sailing and windsurfing access will be closed along with our retail shops (excluding cycling) and mini golf course.

We can confirm that our parks will be remaining open during the current lockdown period for access to the tracks, play parks and nature reserves and we will be providing takeaway services from our cafes.

Bank fishing will be permitted in line with our current covid safe systems. We are continually reviewing all guidelines and we will update our website of any relevant changes that occur during the weeks ahead.

Cycle hire is temporarily closed but will re-open on Tuesday 10th November (pre-booking in advance required).

Car parking annual passes are available to purchase by calling 01780 686800 between 10:00am & 3:30pm

Thank you to everyone who has respected the new rules we have put in place since we reopened earlier this year. We would like to remind all visitors to continue to adhere to social distancing guidelines during their visits to our parks.

Afraid not - I've not researched why that could be.

The most obvious reason I can think of is that we also have 50000 cases but in reality we aren't picking them up through testing.

We’re doing as much if not more tests per day than France though I think ... weird

I didn't mean to say we should limit people to 1km - I don't think we should limit the distance at all (unless it's driving 100 miles to have a walk). My point was around the other things he said like such as the permit and fines (although not in response to exercise) and around the general level of lockdown they have in France.

I should have been clearer in my response.

France are at least having a proper lockdown to try and sort things out - things here seem pretty much normal except the pubs are closed. No problem at all if you want to get your trousers altered, dog washed and trimmed and then buy a Japanese chefs knife (I have shops for all 3 of those open here).

SB

To be honest, the lockdown here seems more lenient than the original one. In my local one horse town, it only seems that the clothes shops, hair/beauty/nail salons and computer sales/assistance, restaurants and bars are closed. The garden centres, DIY shops, builders merchants, bakeries, grocers, butchers, florists, tobacconists, newsagents, opticians and vets are all open.

They are whispers of action being taken in the high schools and colleges, with talks of 50% of lessons going online and some strikes planned by teachers.

There are many factors though:

- Who is being tested? Is it people only with symptoms or without? Is it only very ill people?

- More younger people are getting it in France hence the death rate consistent with ours?

I don't know the answer I am afraid.

The thing is the private sector can be efficient and excellent if you actual make choices on contracts based on ability and performance.

The issues arise when the decisions are based on secret handshakes, their dad's favourite vintage port and fox hunt success.

It can be true, but when you see the same companies getting handing multi-million or multi-billion pound contracts on a track record of failure, it's difficult to see how any well-funded public body couldn't do the same, better and cheaper.

The likes of Serco, Crapita, G4S and others get compensated for failure, time after time. Same with the 'Big Four' accountancy firms.

It's like watching someone walk into a brick wall repeatedly. If any of this happened stateside, those responsible would be locked up for 20 years. Over here they get a peerage. And that's saying something.

P.S. Yes, I've started drinking. Please ignore me.

For anyone going to Alton water and tempted to avoid paying car parking fees and instead choosing to park down Alton Hall Lane, be aware that there have been quite a few instances of vandalism to cars parked there recently.

It should probably be like that here as well though (although 1km is too short really). At the moment we have a pseudo-lockdown which doesn't seem to be much of a lockdown at all from what I've seen.

It seems to be simply a lockdown of recreational establishments.

Either have a lockdown or don't. I don't see how what we have at the moment is really much different to the tiers. Lets see if it's enough in 4 weeks time.

It won't be enough while schools and colleges remain fully open and thousands of teenage kids cram on school buses and public transport or congregate in the streets afterwards and then go home to their working families. Also, it won't be enough if as you say 80% of people won't isolate or don't even understand when they need to and ask for advice on football forums...and it won't be enough while a large enough number of people will still meet up after dark in each others houses for drinks.

I don’t know about the other things you mention but the risk of catching COVID on public transport is extremely low. There have been a number of studies undertaken on the London Underground. See link.

So big caveats you've missed out in there, such as the study was based on data in July when cases were at their lowest. That study also doesn't refer to the London Underground but normal overground trains.

It also doesn't tally at all with this study (although it's from the rail board so perhaps a vested interest?):

The thing which is remarkable about that study is it says "with 44 other passengers without a mask" and that is totally contradicted by the study I've posted which is interesting.

I don’t have a link but I get the London news where I am and they were saying last week that tfl have been doing these tests every month and it’s still very safe (apologies, I don’t remember the figures).
When I’ve been getting on trains to go into work I’ve been opening all the windows, even when it’s cold, not sure if that actually does anything but can’t do any harm!

Opening the windows does a lot, having good ventilation is probably more important than wearing the mask although obviously one should do both.

That was why I was surprised about the underground as the ventilation down there is suboptimal.

Good, I never really got why this sort of stuff was discouraged last time. Surely walking in the forest or along the beach or something is extremely low risk which are far outweighed by the mental and physical health benefits.

You could do at least two of those things last time round.
