Anyone watching Newsnight? this freight leader is scaring the feck out of me 23:10 - Dec 4 with 2464 views | unstableblue | You have a guy who runs a 'coal face' haulage business who knows the ins and outs of trade across Europe, the facts, not just between UK and Europe but also wider countries external You then have Tory nutter (Peter Bone) saying we do have an oven ready deal and its Europe's fault they're not falling over themselves to accept it But the haulier just lays bare that if you put up a custom border for the first time in many decades, it is chaos, it is huge cost, but more importantly it hampers trade with the UK and his alarm call is this - most trade volume is by european hauliers, and his expert view is they are just not interested in driving in and out of the UK as it becomes uneconomic!

You see this sort of post is exactly the reason why I and many others have binned this site off - however I popped in to have a look and I have bitten. Well done. It is quite likely that all racists, thickos and what not are Brexiters but not all Brexiters are racist thickos. Let's get something straight, I am a full on remainer however I am big enough to accept that there are some valid reasons to leave. Calling out everyone as a bigot is actually quite bigoted isn't it? The whole border thing will be chaos whatever happens but it will sort itself out. There are bigger things to worry about but they haven't been reported, probably because ALL the press have actually dragged themselves down to the gutter and are only interested in twisting the truth on mundane matters. Now I am a very small fish in a very large sea and I accept my limitations - however I am a bit of an authority in my area of trade and I have had communications with The Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy. The BIG problem is that UK PLC is refusing to accept CE marking on the goods you buy. This affects everything you buy, everything. So - take all the products my business imports. From the end of 2021 we will have to conform to a new UK standard (which will almost definitely be the same as CE). This will cost us about £1000 per product to apply for the new trade mark. So let's say we import 50 products, that is £50k in hard cash and we cannot sell these products to anywhere outside of UK Also, we will not permitted to dual label so we cannot put UK mark and CE mark on the same product. In effect this means that we cannot export to Europe unless we create the same product with just CE label (which in turn cannot be sold in UK). We are not 100% sure about Northern Ireland, I think NI may only accept CE and I sell a lot to NI so it's a problem. And here's the thing.................................................. This will apply to all goods and not just our industry products. It will apply to everything you buy. Toys, computers, soap, tomatoes etc etc American manufactured goods generally carry CE marks because they export a lot to Europe but now any USA goods will have to comply to new UK standard and they also cannot be dual labelled so they will have to produce completely different packaging for UK and pay for testing and authorisation. Will they bother? Many products will simply disappear. Furthermore - The ironic thing is that to get a product authorised under a standard (whether it be CE, USA or whatever) it has to be done by what is called a Competent Authority. In our industry there isn't a Competent Authority to offer this classification in the UK - so we would have to use a European Competent Authority to do it! This is the situation as of two days ago - personally I think that common sense will prevail and we will sort a deal and CE will be accepted etc etc. I think it's all bargaining tactics and bluff and bluster - however, it might, just might happen and it will be an absolute disaster. The EU is as much at fault as UK in all of this, EU are petrified and have got themselves stuck in a corner as much as UK has. Quite frankly it's all ridiculous but I think that business will demand a deal.

You've explained the looming disaster in your line of business. The haulier explained similarly large obstacles to be overcome in their line of business, But Peter Bone literally isn't listening. Just like enough of the electorate in enough of the seats in the corrupt, anti-democratic First Past the Post system weren't listening at the General Election this time last year. It will be a disaster. There isn't enough time now for a deal, and there certainly isn't enough time to resolve all of the problems facing every aspect of economic life that a No Deal will cause. The only sensible solution right now is to kick the can down the road again and for the UK Govt and the EU to issue a "No Fault, blame Covid" statement, and roll-over the 1 year extension. But Boris probably won't want to lose face, and people like Peter Bone wouldn't let him. It would tear the Tory Party apart, and from May onwards, the Tories have put the Tory Party ahead of the country. We are screwed, unless something quite momentous happens. And don't even get me started on what this means for Northern Ireland. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

As a remainer I could see aspects of the "political integration" argument. I would have been "happy" with a Norway style deal (as was more or less promised in the leave campaign), as it keeps most of the important things and removes most of the political, even if it was a stepping stone to something "different" in the future. Where we are now is a ticking time bomb, I am seeing so many smaller companies "give up" on export markets because they don't know what they need to do yet - just today a dog food supplier has emailed to say "no more exports from Great Britain" - so nothing to NI either. Every little chip away from the economy, every extra cost added. Starmer should win in four years just by standing at the soap box and asking "where's the £350 million?"

I think that’s a good post. Having some empathy for an opposing view is the only way to drag society forward rather than fracturing it apart. I’m a big remainer too but to bin everyone off who voted otherwise is not right. And right now the EU demands seem pretty unreasonable. I don’t share your optimism though over ports. I think it could be chaos. And if we don’t get a deal and stop French fishermen, I think we will see a lot of militant blocking of ports etc.

Mind games. | |

Anyone watching Newsnight? this freight leader is scaring the feck out of me on 11:45 - Dec 5 by Lord_Lucan | You see this sort of post is exactly the reason why I and many others have binned this site off - however I popped in to have a look and I have bitten.
