.... they've really warmed up to Mourinho despite massive early concern... and are quite optimistic of a real title push.

But there is a niggle that the low possession and letting the big teams come on to them is not the Spurs way, and they wouldn't want it in the long term. And that without Kane and Son's brilliance to provide moments of true attacking excitement, they really wouldn't be good to watch. As the Man U fans said 'attack, attack, attack'

Nice problem to have though, and I quite like the dark arts of their pressing and man marking.

I don't Town fans will ever be happy unless we get back to the waves of attack that this club was built on.

I don't understand this tbh, as though football's climate could be in any way compared to the past. There is no resemblance.

It gives some context for the scepticism towards him, doesn't it?

Only if those making those comments hadn't given it the slightest bit of consideration I suppose.

That's putting aside of course, that it wasn't even the case at the time of the article, as Steve says.

And let's be honest, plenty of people did try to point that out but just got shouted over and/or ignored. We tend to see that happen a lot, even with some important political matters don't we.

Well, the full context was that we'd started the season with a freakish winning run, then lapsed into more or less the same form that we'd shown the year before (losing 8 from 11 shortly before that). So, rather like now, most supporters didn't imagine we'd be hanging around in 7th (and were proved correct on that).

Maybe in hindsight supporters should've been better at reading the financial reality that we were now a much diminished club and should expect to be posting the lowest league finishes of our lifetimes. But, I think that's a big ask when so much of supporting a football club is about hope and optimism.

But it isn't hindsight when people were trying to speak up at the time. It's only hindsight to those who refused to listen.

We were all aware of the financial constraints and that MMc was doing what he had to within parameters.

He couldn't stay and be Town manager forever, but the way happened was a disaster.

What starts off as "our worst league finish for fifty years" can all too quickly become "our best league finish in the last decade". If it's results and league tables that matter, McCarthy is not the best target pick to abuse. We've had a couple of managers since him who have fared worse. And counting...

I don't think it's hindsight per se. I just think it's unfair to look back and think "what, fools!" at supporters for not being grateful to see us pragmatically grinding out lower league finishes than most of us had ever seen before. I don't think it's a realistic thing to expect of most supporters.

That’s what tends to happen when you sell your leading striker a day or so before the closure of a transfer window and don’t replace him.

Waghorn and Garner made a difference in 2017/18 - it might have been a decisive one had all the creative midfielders managed more than about 10 appearances between them.

I mean, your lowest finish in decades by definition isn't something that "tends to happen", is it? It last tended to happen in 1959!

(Celina made 38 appearances on his own in 2017-18, Ward 37, McGoldrick 24, Sears 37)

It tends to happen “when your best striker gets sold before the end of the August transfer window” and was never satisfactorily replaced in the January one.

Sears a creative midfielder? Ward a better creative option than Bishop or Dozzell? Did you cheer when McGoldrick had his groin torn open by Glenn Loovens? “Yesssss...one more barrier for McCarthy to have to overcome.”

If you and others can learn anything from the last few years, it’s to appreciate a good thing when we’ve got it.

The Evans' years have killed ambition amongst the fan base. What a dismal place to be. Maybe we should be thankful for what we have now, because we'll look on these as the golden years in a few seasons?

Let's not sugar coat Mick's time too much. He was effective as grinding out some results and holding us to mid-table positions when the stated aspiration was to be challenging for promotion. It was grim watching. Of course he was better than what came next, but that can't be blamed on fans. They didn't pick Hurst or force through all the player changes. Anyway, we've been over his hundreds of times.

Hadn't happened in the previous 5 decades. Did we not sell a single key player from 1959 to 2016? Come on.

Sears was the player McCarthy chose to put on the left, Ward an attacking midfielder McCarthy signed and picked week after week for 2 seasons. You said our "creative players" played 10 games that season. McGoldrick managed more than double that, Celina four times that.

It's beyond me how we were supposed to conceive of the worst league finishes in our lifetime as "a good thing" that we should "appreciate". Even McCarthy's biggest defenders wouldn't have made that stretch at the time.
