However, the defending side is allowed to flick a player to block the ball once it has been played but the defensive player must be stationary if it does touch the ball otherwise it's a free kick.

The "blocking flick" ruins the flow of the game.

I had the same problem until I repainted the blue shirts in a different teams colours whereupon they became mysteriously unbreakable.

No the ball has to be stationary

Inconsistent... the goalkeeper is allowed to be used to block a moving ball so therefore so should any player.
