'Banning Christmas would be inhuman' on 18:04 - Dec 16 by Vic | Maybe it’s to do with the fact that Christianity is the historic and currently still the national religion (at least nominally). Or maybe it’s to do with numbers - 31.5m Christians and 2.6m Muslims? |
Let's not pretend it's religious for the majority. Traditional sure, religious for most? No.

'Banning Christmas would be inhuman' on 18:14 - Dec 16 by SpruceMoose | How come there aren't 31.5m people in Church every Sunday anyway? Some Christians they are... Would it be cynical of me to suggest that they might be Christians of convenience? [Post edited 16 Dec 2020 18:32]

He means to, but by the time he's gone and got his glasses to read the complaint, found his hearing aids to discuss it with Gav from the other room, and got around to replying... he's forgotten what it was he was supposed to be doing.

So I guess this means that if an employer were to tell an employee that they are going to have to work on a nationally recognised bank holiday, they can refuse based on it being inhuman treatment? Nice.

I guess the people celebrating Eid under COVID restrictions managed to do it without getting smited, so presumably the Christian deity would have been equally relaxed about people worshiping in a slightly different way this year? Or are the various gods a bit like the leaders of the nation states and haven’t agreed a common approach?

It's not religious but it's a massive cultural event in this country. I am not going anywhere Christmas Day but quite frankly if they "cancelled Christmas" it would come as a massive relief. The media have been an absolute disgrace throughout this crisis. For them to keep saying things like "is Christmas cancelled Prime Minister?" like some sort of 5 year old is just ridiculous. Rigby, Kuenssberg and Peston have been especially bad. Almost encouraging people to see how far they can push things.

Muslim chap I worked with and managed many years ago (he's still a friend) said it was unfair that Christmas day was a bank holiday but Eid wasn't and he had to use his holiday allowance. I said I was perfectly happy for him to have Eid off and come in Christmas day instead. He declined, saying that he enjoyed Christmas day almost as much and that many forget Jesus is a major prophet in the Koran.

Did he want the entire country to get Eid off?

Why not? A few more bank holidays would be nice. We could have Eid, Diwali, Passover, Vaisakha. Problem is most are lunar calendar, so keep moving around - and Eid they only decide for certain two or three days beforehand.

I think we have the least amount of bank holidays in Europe? Or one of the lowest? So yes it would be nice. Imagine the Daily Mail if those became bank holidays and St George's Day wasn't. Would be fun viewing.

There are quite a few religious holidays that teachers in NYC get off I believe. Off the top of my head there's at least Eid and Yom Kippur. I believe no Christian Teacher complaints have been received.

Which is another holiday that has become mostly about consumerism rather than religion (namely stuffing your face with chocolate) for these supposed 31.5 million 'Christians'.
