They aren't factory farmed as it is impossible to breed eels, they only breed in the Sargasso Sea. He is a silly bollox though if he voted for Brexit and didn't realise he would have to fill out export forms - although he has a free trade deal and all he has to do is issue a commercial invoice with the HS Commodity code and get an EORI number (which he has probably got anyway)**** ***Although I'm not sure if MAFF (or the EU equivalent would now need to get more involved) Looks like a non story to me. At least if he goes bust we might have a few more eels as him and his fellow eel sellers are stripping the planet of eels as they catch them in insane numbers as they come through our estuaries.

It is immoral to sell or eat elvers. Eels are in big trouble.

Indeed. I read The Book of Eels by Patrick Svensson over the summer and it was extremely disturbing and eye opening. Eels are fascinating creatures and like you say, are in big trouble. [Post edited 29 Dec 2020 14:25]

Growing up we had an ‘eel river’ in the village - we’d go and watch the elvers battling up the sluice, by slithering up the walls - amazing to think of the journey they were on.

You’re right and Lucan clearly has a strong feeling about this. I watched it and he used the ‘be careful what you wish for.’ Didn’t really take in the context.

I wonder how much that particular company makes of its location in Gloucester, on the river Severn. Elvers fished from the Severn are highly prized around the world. I suspected he was a leave voter before it was mentioned in the clip. Could be suffering from a bit of buyer's remorse currently. No sympathy.

I used to go eel fishing as a kid and got loads in the Blackwater in Maldon, nowadays they are decimated. I tried a bit of eeling at Orford a few years back and only caught bootlaces which I put back. As soupytwist says that bloke is situated close to The Severn which is a major eel route - silly old sod ought to worry more about what he is doing to the eel population rather than blub about a bit of paperwork.

There is a recovery of sorts in their population and there are more about than there used to be but the numbers are still very low. There is also a link to the increase in Signal Crayfish numbers and the decrease of the Eel population as they used to eat the damn things. Anyway, the bloke shouldn't be catching them in my book at least when their population is how it is.

Interesting fact, thanks. Maybe not factory farming then but still pretty horrific.

Used to catch them under Wilford Bridge in Melton on the Deben as a kid. This is going back nearly 50 years though. Much bigger than the ones in the clip.

Indeed. Bloody things are cropping up quite frequently. Had a day tench fishing back end of August, one bite all day, Crayfish. On sweetcorn too. As for eels, not caught one for 10-12 years, though did see one in the brook last summer.
| We have no village green, or a shop.
It's very, very quiet.
I can walk to the pub. |

Bloke I sometimes work with is an eel fisherman on the Severn Loads of hassle to get the permit to fish; I believe the permits are hereditary. They are only allowed to dip for elvers with a net from the bank....so all the ones midstream are safe You are absolutely right, he was telling me that the amount he catches has plummeted in the last few years and 20% of the catch has to be returned to the river under threat of some eye-watering penalties if caught cheating Keep them swimming free I say....a few years ago I tried some in the Pie and Mash shop in Walton F***ing revolting

I don't mind jellied or hot boiled eels but I much prefer them fried in butter. Very tasty.

Think there are quite a few local schemes for catching the crayfish in pots to help alleviate the problem. Then you can sell them to restaurants, fishmongers and the like. They are nasty little beggars, and this is an environmentally friendly and tasty way to help out.

Smoked eel in Japanese or Chinese places is absolutely delish. One of my favourites to have. Dad always used to eat jellied eels. Rotten stuff. Put me off savoury jelly for life.

Quite difficult to get a licence to trap for Crayfish nowadays and , if you intend to sell them on, you need a commercial licence and there are limitations on how far you can transport them from your trapping site. The amount of environmental devastation they cause is horrific and , whilst you can never really get rid of them, any removed and killed is good.

I was going to throw a trap in the gipping but decided that it was fairly inevitable it would get nicked so didn't bother - you don't get much meat of the büggers either.

I don't know if there still is, but there was at one point a thriving black market for elvers on the Severn with nefarious goings on under cover of darkness. Two of my mother in law's (she's from Lydney) male relatives had permits to catch salmon on the Severn. This is going back a bit and they both died on the river. One while fishing, the other during the construction of the original Severn bridge. There's still a small number of net fisherman catching salmon in Black Rock between the old and new bridges.

He honestly thought that leaving the biggest free trade block on our doorstep was going to somehow free up trade both within and outside it? How can someone with such a lack of understanding be in charge of a business let alone the fact his vote gets counted?
