How good was Colin Bell then guys? 12:16 - Jan 9 with 2557 viewsbournemouthblue

I assume Town would have had some run ins with him?

I guess he is Beattielike for City fans?

Alcohol is the answer but I can't remember the question!

Bell played over 500 games for City which is 5th in their all time list, but also accompanied by others who were a part of the most successful period in their history (barring recent petro $ fuelled years) e.g. Corrigan, Oakes, Doyle, Booth, Summerbee & Young.
Also Bell was never the same again after a bad knee injury in 1975, at age 29 & he played under 50 games in the next 4 seasons.
A very good player, but didn't quite make the "great" category for me because he didn't establish himself in the England team until 1972 as Bobby Charlton & then Alan Ball were ahead of him.
Bell, while not a physical player, had quite a reputation as one of those players who was constantly in the referee's ear.

I saw him play at Portman Road for Bury in the early/mid 60s. He was club captain there at age about 18! He was awesome, all over the pitch - defending one minute and driving forward the next. Amazing player.

I don't specifically remember him from playing Bury, although I would have been there, but in his Man City days he oozed class. He was a very important part of a very good Man City team in the late 1960's and early 1970's

He had huge amounts of energy, as you say he was an all over the pitch type player.

Francis Lee used to get more publicity but in my book Bell was more important for City even than he was

He was good enough to keep Colin Viljoen out of the England team for many years - that's how good he was !
And, a bit like Martin Peters, even if you hated the team he played for you still had a grudging admiration for his talents.

Franny Lee used to win and take the pens.

I remember the joke about Man City signing a Chinese Lee Won Pen.

Yes, he had the grace of a ballet dancer and the speed of a racehorse.
Or something.

He was a Rolls Royce footballer. Class. A midfielder that could do the lot. I saw him a number of times but particularly remember him scoring at PR in the autumn of 1974 in I think a 1-1 draw, not least because Man City had a great AC Milan away kit that day.

When I played Top Trumps as a kid, I was always well happy if I got him as he was the best player in the pack!

Ramsey was too loyal in my opinion. Bell should have been first choice in the 1970 world cup. He was an extraordinary player.

Does anyone else remember the Man City fan called Pat who used to ring a bell when he went charging forward?

My memory of seeing him live was the last game of 71-72 season when we beat City to stop them winning the league. He was one of those players who oozed class and made it look easy. Difficult to dislike him, bu City had plenty you coould dislike then, inclduing manager Malcolm Allison.
Anyone remember that TV sitcom The Dustbinmen, where the caharcter played by Graham Haberfield worshipped Bell as a god? Great series, always made me laugh.
