England win toss. Very big advantage on these pitches.

Hopefully the pitch will be somewhat better than in Chennai.

Tho there were possible reasons for that: https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/sports/cricket/england-in-india/2nd-test-bcc

2 no balls from Ishant bookend a wicket. Ball swinging a lot. Wonder how tempted Root was to bowl.

Unplayable ball to Sibley, especially when he's so deep in his crease...

I read this yesterday, the pink ball seems to do an awful lot early on and then settles more so than the red one.

The useless Sibley gone, lets enjoy two stroke makers at the crease now.

Sibley is far from useless in Test cricket. Holds an end down so that others can play around him. Two strokeplayers at the crease early in the innings just leads to the fall of wickets (c.f. Bairstow).

I'd say we've seen the end of him at test level for a while.

This is the worst run of form for opening partners since 1907!

Benefit of the doubt on the umpire's call would have helped Root there. In a bit of trouble now, need to not loose any more wickets this session and then score as the ball goes soft.

Only had half an eye on this as mainly been in meetings but I've seen quite a few puffs of dust from the pitch already again when I've been able to look up.

well England will be bowling today before evening lunch,or whatever they are calling it, at this rate.

thinking too much about the pink ball IMO about the call to bat first, Swanns been quite amusing as always but points out the seamers have got 10overs before the ball is then all about spin...on a spinning pitch, but there you go hopefully it nixes that whole the team that wins the toss automatically wins the game stuff

Did I hear this right - Archer, on the card to bat at 7, has a test average of 8? That must be one of the longest tails in history.

One of those "would have been a good toss to lose" situations? (I haven't yet had time to watch or listen to any of it btw).

Looks like it so far. Been an absolutely dreadful last hour although India have bowled superbly and kept the pressure on throughout.

A 3-1 series defeat is perhaps something most of would have taken before the series but, after winning the first Test, this is disappointing at the moment.

Not really, Archer can bat, just not got a knock yet at test level.
Broad can bat.
Leach is no mug.
Anderson can't bat.

So not a very long tail at all.

My OP has aged well here!

Let's hope we can do similar with the ball and the match is all over in our favour before the end of Day 3!

Evening session, new pink ball. If it hoops around all over the place we might get a first innings lead*.

* manage some damage limitation.

First-class average of a bit under 24 (not sure if that included Tests or not) still seems low to me for a Test match 7. Last time I saw him for Sussex he was batting at 9, but that's a little while ago. By way of comparison, he'd bat 9 for Essex, or possibly 8 (depending whether he was above or below Simon Harmer, who has a slightly better average and 4000 first-class runs), so he seems at least one place too high. (I'd expect the Test side to have a stronger batting 7,8,9 than a county.)

I have a feeling the pitch will suddenly appear fine when they bat!

But love your optimism!
