I assume you're a fair bit older than me if your answer to bullying in the modern age is to "be big and strong" and "put up with that." That sort of attitude leads to suicide in young people. | |

I mean, I've never been in the forces, nor in a trade - but the point there is that you've got people around you supporting you, wanting you to improve, because you're starting from a point of knowing nothing about the trade in question, or, er, fighting.
Whereas a youth footballer will have spent an inordinate amount of time training as a footballer, focussing towards it throughout their formulative years - I'm not sure how I'd react at the age of 17/18 to be told I wasnt good enough, after all that training, the midweek sessions, time spent away from my schoolmates - I'd suggest that it would hit me bloody hard. I’m sure it does hit many hard, it is after all probably the end of a long held dream. However it’s not l8ke it just happens at 18. The kids that get that far have survived the cut over many years. It should be abundantly clear when people disappear every year that the odds on making all the way to the professional game are remote. As I was told when one of my friend’s sons was in the Academy, the only people who make “need to be so single minded that they’d be willing to sell their granny to succeed” |  | | |
