Lowestoft. Any opinions? on 15:28 - Mar 7 with 1143 viewsBlueastheycome

On a hot sunny you wouldn’t want to be anywhere else.

On every other day you really wish you were somewhere else.

Only I’m allowed to talk this way about it though cause it’s my hometown. I get offended when people who aren’t from here talk about it on the same way.

Seriously though it depends how you choose to perceive it. For instance:

We’re an unassuming and honest sort of bunch quietly living out our lives surrounded by beautiful beaches and the broads. A rough gem so to speak. The fact it really is the end of the line (train wise this is a fact) is rather appealing.

Or you could see it as a rundown sh*thole with no prospects or future.

The choose is yours!

Exactly this!

Saw a mate's picture of Sparrow's Nest Gardens the other day when it was nice out and thought 'wish I was there!'

It's sad because the town has so much potential but there's hardly any work and it just feels very tired at the minute. Even surrounding areas like Pakefield and Kessingland have lost much appeal to tourists as well.

And other councils sending their 'undesirables' our way because of dirt cheap rents really hasn't helped matters in recent years.

Sh*t hole like all UK seaside towns......

Decent back in in the day, but not for me in 2021.

Yeh I agree.

I went to Hastings a few years ago. It’s a similar sort of town in size and population on the sea. And it was lovely. A thriving hub of businesses, cafes and restaurants. I blueprint of what Lowestoft could be like in some parallel universe. Hastings is obviously a lot closer to London which makes it an attractive day tripping destination.

Lowestoft remote location and poor transport links is both its blessing and it’s curse at the same time. I mean blooming heck it takes a 1 Hour and 30 mins just to get to Ipswich on the train!

Just a frankie and bennies and a modestly decent cinema would be nice!

In my experience yes, absolutely. It is much more scum focused on these parts, but I know some people on here think it’s more 50/50

The THIRD bridge (There's one at Oulton Broad too) is under construction. They've started digging holes etc. The rumours however are that the bridge in town needs a lot of work, so soon after number three is open number two could be closed.
The port seems busier than it has been for a few years, even with lockdown, and the wind farm industry is helping, although I'm not sure how much local employment this brings
Carlton Marshes wildlife reserve has undergone a £3 million upgrade and is a marvellous place to visit on the edge of town and adjacent to the Broads.
The beaches are splendid and EleniV oil from 1978 is at last being cleared from the North Denes.
I understand a new MacDonalds is being constructed somewhere - if you're into that sort of thing, and thankfully there is no Ben & Jerries.
On the downside, the best pub in Suffolk has just been forced to close, but the building is up for sale and we hope it will continue as a pub in the not too distant future.
All in all, things are looking up.

Hey what a good post and you are correct; why shouldn't you defend your home town. I have often driven from Ipswich to Lowestoft just to have a breakfast at The Thatch and a walk along the beach. Is there a better beach in Suffolk?

I think Gorleston is a nicer town personally.

Nice beach and some good houses around the sea front area.

Its never going to be Southwold but then neither is Lowestoft.

Good post 200 million of capital expenditure just started.. global hub for offshore wind including education facilities for this, CEFAS committed for 25 years, best beaches in east anglia, proper starting point of the broads, low crime and opportunities rising for kids. Sadly like all old fishing/seaside towns has many issues but certainly on the up and a great place to visit for staycations!

plenty more yellow than blue, they speak almost Norfolk up there,so theres certainly not much love for Ipswich, someone mentioned the lack of jobs thing, thats a big part of it, because basically the only place nearby that offers employment is Norwich so it has way more of a pull than Ipswich which might as well be the other side of the country given the transport links we have with it.

The new McDonalds is a 2 storey 24/7 restaraunt, in Kirkley, like we need more fast food here, it's 2 minutes from the KFC.

A new Burger King opened up as well, right?

Lola's kebab house has some serious competition now anyway.

I will be reporting this rampant anti-Lowestoftianism to the relevant body which deals with such matters.

Kicking another Suffolk town when it's down is not very neighbourly.

Back in the day Lowestoft was definitely more blue than yellow but sadly our numbers are dwindling with the clubs decline. Thats not to say there's not many of us but you'd have to accept our demographic is definitely ageing up here and much of that is also due the club giving up on the area. When my eldest was a nipper there were never any shortage of school holiday coaching courses run by the club all widely accepted as the best around but there's none of that anymore. I would really love to see those days return when ITFC saw the whole of Suffolk as "it's patch".

A lot of what he says is true unfortunately.

If you don’t have parents or close friends that get you in Ipswich Town then Lowestoft folk generally lean towards Norwich FC due to its closer proximity for nightlife, shops, cinema etc. Ipswich really does feel the full 45 miles away in every sense.

I know this can be a hot and contentious issue amongst us hardy and resilient band of us flying the flag for Ipswich in Lowestoft, but that’s my two pennies worth.

It's an odd one, I've had countless rows with people who live and were born in Lowestoft about supporting Norwich. They hate Great Yaremouth and all things Norfolk apart from supporting Norwich. I've only been here since 1987 but the locals are a funny lot lol.

It’s an interesting one. I identify more with Lowestoft, Beccles, Gorleston, Yarmouth and Norwich culturally because they are on my door step, despite the fact those places extend over county borders.

I identify more with these places than say, Ipswich, Stowmarket, Bury St Edmunds.

But I do despise Norwich and bleed blue when it comes to Ipswich so it’s all good really.

I rarely post on here albeit I view on a daily basis but feel the need to make comment about my place of residence . I’m far from being a local as only been living in Lowey for 33 years but would I genuinely want to live elsewhere ....I’m not so sure. Yes it has its issues mainly due to high unemployment & a lack of industry but I sense a change in the seaside air. There are areas of the town which only a fool would defend BUT having worked extensively in many parts of Suffolk there are far worse places trust me.....however I won’t name the towns in question at risk of offending the residents.
In essence there are some wonderful positive aspects to Lowestoft and in both my professional & personal opinion I’ve found most who dismiss the town do not live anywhere near. My biggest gripe tends to be the increase in Budgie fans these days but there is still plenty of Blue Army around thankfully !
