Lowestoft. Any opinions? on 17:59 - Mar 7 by Meadowlark
The THIRD bridge (There's one at Oulton Broad too) is under construction. They've started digging holes etc. The rumours however are that the bridge in town needs a lot of work, so soon after number three is open number two could be closed. The port seems busier than it has been for a few years, even with lockdown, and the wind farm industry is helping, although I'm not sure how much local employment this brings Carlton Marshes wildlife reserve has undergone a £3 million upgrade and is a marvellous place to visit on the edge of town and adjacent to the Broads. The beaches are splendid and EleniV oil from 1978 is at last being cleared from the North Denes. I understand a new MacDonalds is being constructed somewhere - if you're into that sort of thing, and thankfully there is no Ben & Jerries. On the downside, the best pub in Suffolk has just been forced to close, but the building is up for sale and we hope it will continue as a pub in the not too distant future. All in all, things are looking up.

Of course The Stanford Arms! Let's hope it is taken on and resurrected. I was looking forward to the end of lockdown and visiting The Stanford for a pint or two. Fingers crossed.

What industries are there now, apart from fishing of course?
And is the fishing still as big a part of the town as it used to be?
It had to be one of the country's largest suppliers surely?
Excuse my ignorance, I've not been up that way for many years.
I'm just wondering why it's suffered such decline although if I wasn't so lazy it's probably already within the thread.
Fishing is still here but nothing like the heyday.
Usual thing, location is poor for other industries, influx of foreign nationals to service the larger industries (because locals don't fancy it) and its the perfect storm.
Saying that, the area as a whole is beautiful and its far from lost cause.
I saw 3 bridges mentioned at one point but don't what they or what purpose they serve.
I should read through properly and then come to it when I get 10 minutes.
I'm interested to understand the connections really. The rise of takeaway food in an declining area is an interesting one even if it does buy into the stereotyping.
There could be other factors such as the type of work, shift work can mean a higher demand can't it? I know when I first started nights taxiing I wondered why half the drivers were overweight but after a while I found myself buying more takeaways because of the hours I was working.

Essentially the town is split in half by the harbour, which connects to the inner harbour (Lake Lothing) and then Oulton Broad to the west. So to get from North to South or the other way means crossing the water, which is currently only possible by two bridges. In the summer and at busy times of day the town is gridlocked, especially if either bridge is opened to allow boats through. Also, there's a couple of railway level crossings that cause jams when Ipswich or Norwich trains go through. The thinking is that the third bridge will ease the congestion..... It's not really possible to bypass the town because the sea is to the East and The Broads are to the West.

I escaped to Devon in 1990 and have never looked back. Lowestoft was a great place to live in the 70's and 80' but it then started to be ruined by successive councils and a total lack of funding. There had been a decent amount of industry and even some decent wages on offer.
Then one by one they started shutting down as the infrastructure was never upgraded to a decent level and no efforts made to get the Goddamn 3rd Crossing built. Traffic was becoming constantly grid locked, money was disappearing from the High Street due to many jobs being lost. Then there were terrible links to the rest of the the region and also the country as a whole.
I still go home a few every year, usually to get to see ITFC and it is so sad to see how stuck in the bad times Lowestoft is, but just outside the main town are some fabulous places Oulton Broad, Oulton Village, Lound, Somerleyton, Blunderston, Beccles, Ellough and many many more.
My biggest disappointments are always the state of the piers and the loss of sand from the South Beach. On the plus side some of the best chip shops, pubs and cafes in the country are in and about Lowestoft.

Moving there Imminently, just waiting on solicitors to do their bit, IMHO a lot nicer than Plaistow where I have lived for the last 3 years, keep an eye out for a middle aged cyclist in a QPR shirt!!

Brings back some wonderful memories. Our family holiday when I was a kid was to a caravan park in Pakefield. Used to look forward to that week so much! A few years on & Lowestoft was the scene of my first holiday without my parents, a campsite at Sparrows Nest near the cricket club during cricket week. Lazy days watching cricket & drinking beer. Met my first girlfriend there, amid many youthful drunken nights pub crawling. Holds a very special place in my heart does Lowestoft & do hope the place can prosper & succeed.

Yeh I agree.
I went to Hastings a few years ago. It’s a similar sort of town in size and population on the sea. And it was lovely. A thriving hub of businesses, cafes and restaurants. I blueprint of what Lowestoft could be like in some parallel universe. Hastings is obviously a lot closer to London which makes it an attractive day tripping destination.
Lowestoft remote location and poor transport links is both its blessing and it’s curse at the same time. I mean blooming heck it takes a 1 Hour and 30 mins just to get to Ipswich on the train!
Just a frankie and bennies and a modestly decent cinema would be nice!

Although I can't see the FILTH (Failed in London? Try Hastings) acronym working so well...

I used to spend most summers on the beach there with the only thing changing being which pier to sit near. Wonderful memories. Never understoud why it's not more succesful as a place as it seems to have a good backbone, even if it is a little remote.
Has anyone ever looked at their own postings for last day or so? Oh my... so sorry. Was Ullaa
