Yes, happy for you to include that.

Agreed, if it were to happen I don't think I could cope with the fallout, it would be like Brexit on steroids.

Abolition of the monarchy is so 1970’s. Surely it should be #defundthemonarchy?

Presumably Brexit voters would be pro this type of expensive, unelected officials?

I know that was then, but it could be again..

No - because of the trouble getting rid of them would cause, and because of the dreadful possibilities of an alternative head of state.

Or, to put it another way, keep your loonies where you can see them.

Agree 100%. The biggest problem would be agreeing on what took its place, what powers they would have and method of selection.

I appreciate the problem but don't see that as a reason to retain what is currently in place if one believes that current set up to be undesirable - the constitutional equivalent of BCWYWF?

Of course if one feels that currently we have the best head of state option then that is an entirely different matter.

You have already given the answer. ‘Keep the loonies where you can see them”

How would you elect a President?. The US way, where money talks; The French way perhaps where you whittle a long list of candidates down to two and then vote against the one you don’t want?

Do you even let the people elect the President, after all the electorate are well known for collectively getting it wrong.

I’ve always been against the monarchy as a matter of principle. It’s nothing against the people themselves, especially the Queen. It’s the principle of an unelected head of state. It feels wrong constitutionally, especially in the 21st century. For me, it also sits on top of the system of privilege that it supports and supports it.

The problem is how do you replace it with something better? Most US Presidents in my lifetime have been poor to say the least. Macron hardly is a beacon of light, but at least these people can be replaced.

If the monarchy is retained, maybe scale it down to a Netherlands or Scandinavian version.

Well occasionally they have to help out MI5 (allegedly) by keeping an eye on the Surveyor of the Queen's Pictures'.
