We got blue (black) passports though..... on 08:35 - Mar 23 by GlasgowBlue | Other than the ability to go it alone to procure and distribute Covid vaccinations which has seen the UK vaccinate more people than the entire 27 EU countries put together. As somebody said. Economies can be rebuilt. |
We could have done that anyway, we didn't need to leave in order to do that.

We got blue (black) passports though..... on 18:43 - Mar 22 by nodge_blue | I voted remain but I cant see the point of keep going on about it. We have to move on and make the most of it. |
Same as me I voted remain and was not happy at first but wanted the result to be honoured its democracy. Like you say we have to move on and make the most of it

Nah, I'll be straight on the rejoin bandwagon. All this talk of conceding defeat isn't very British I must say.

We got blue (black) passports though..... on 08:25 - Mar 23 by DanTheMan | I'll get one when my passport expires. Not that I care about the colour given they just sit in a draw. Anyone who truly cares about the colour is a bit dim. |
So true my passport expired last year and need a new one i couldnt care less what colour it is!

Especially when there are passport holders available in every colour. Your passport can be rainbow coloured if you really want it to be.

Do you have any plans to leave? Not suggesting you should, just interested based on your strong words.

That's on them. Usually there are benefits to collective purchasing power but that hasn't transpired in this instance. As members we could have opted out and gone our own way, so crediting Brexit for the vaccine rollout is somewhat disingenuous.

Well I've already left England, which is the second worst bit of the UK after Wales. I have very tentative plans to live in Canada or NZ at some point but that will depend on several factors. Ultimately I'd like to retire to Croatia, which thankfully has exempted itself from the 90 day visa requirements that are now in place across much of the EU.

Voting 'leave' is the political and economic equivalent of saying 'we'll be better in League One, we can regroup and bring through our young players. We'll piss the division anyway'.

I like how you moved to the region of Scotland that had the highest vote share to remain in the UK and has returned a Tory MP at the last two general elections

Disagree. Four countries were lose to deal with AZ and then the EU took over and it dragged on for months. The vaccine is, IMO, the one undeniable benefit from being outside the EU. As the woman at the top of the EU (can't remember her name) said, there were benefits to being a lifeboat instead of a tanker. Not sure the rest of the tanker would have been thrilled at individual countries leaving that tanker and racing ahead on their own.

That's it, ignore the rest of the post to avoid criticising the precious EU. I don't deny that the countries had the right but we all know the internal workings of the EU and they expected everyone on board. As GB says not one of those countries went out alone in the end. The four that tried had their negotiation taken over.

"I don't deny that countries had the right" - so you don't disagree then. Glad we've cleared that up. You've always been quite confused about the EU and its remit in fairness, but we got there in the end.

You won't respond to the point that four countries virtually had a deal done but were pressured to go in with the rest of the EU.

I'm not sure how that's relevant to the UK's ability to source its own vaccines not being related to Brexit. We were able to join the EU in block purchasing last year but chose not to. That choice was ours last year during the transition period just as it would have been before we left. Nothing you have said refutes that.

Not one country inside the EU who had the choice went ahead and ordered alone. The UK did. It proves nothing but I think the link is clear. There was plenty of pressure by the sounds of it. Just because countries have options doesn't mean they aren't pressured not to use them.

And the UK always could have done. Brexit makes no difference on that front. The only 'wins' Brexit can claim always inevitably turn out to be things we could always have done. I get that you have a lot of guilt to assuage, but taking issue with facts isn't a great way to go about it.

The EU are still in a pretty good place by world standards and will be where we are now soon enough. A few weeks is neither here nor there in the timeframe of the pandemic. I'm old enough to remember when you were critical of the Welsh & Scottish government's for their slow vaccine start, but they soon caught up And the economy angle is a vacuous argument. We'd be in as much of a mess irrespective of whether we were in the EU or not, plus it's not either virus or economy. Deal with the virus better and you don't have as much rebuilding of the economy to do.

Ha. I think i'm right here. No attempt to cover any guilt. This is one issue. I'm not trying to get one in the bank so I can throw "but the vaccines!" out there every time the EU is brought up. It was a mistake and I acknowledge my part in it.
