*Warning - the BBC report details the killing of an unarmed child by an American policeman.

From that, it reads horribly like the 21-year-old gave the gun to the kid to dispose of and then ran away, leaving him to face armed police. Combined with trigger-happy* law enforcement, leading to tragedy.

* That having been said, it was a lone policeman down a dark alley following a chase on foot, faced by someone with a weapon. As far as the officer knew, he was likely in a shoot-or-be-shot situation.

The fact that images of paramilitarized cops at protests have become normalised is a little worrying too.

The officer shouted, "show me your hands"....the 13 year old stopped, showed his hands and was shot in the chest.

Awful.

It's not just the police either (although they clearly should be above all this). This is just coming in this morning:

Their addiction to guns and weapons needs to be ended, it's just hard to see how it can happen. It needs Biden (or any president) to be bold and just go for it and then deal with the fallout.

Any society that can produce a film like '21 Jump Street' in which shooting people is depicted as comedy, has a deep rooted problem with guns and will have trouble weaning themselves off them.

Indeed. Gave the child almost no time to react. Like he expected to receive a violent response rather than compliance and reacted accordingly, regardless of the actual circumstances.

Like the Breonna Taylor case, firing a gun is the first reaction to an uncertain situation, rather than the measure of last resort. Poor training? Lack of the right material for police officers? A bad culture within departments? Probably a combination of all those.

That's where the "defund the police" slogan actually comes from. Forces in the US have been spending on paramilitary gear (including heavily armoured vehicles), rather than crime reduction programmes or, it seems, officer training and development.

A fiction about the Wild West has been a part of the national psyche for generations. The Wounded Knee massacre (including the slaughter of fleeing women with babies) was perpetrated by cavalry troopers who had grown up in eastern cities reading pulp novels about raping and scalping injuns, so saw their victims as monsters rather than humans.

The whole gun culture breeds fear. It says that on average 50 police officers are shot dead every year in the US (plus however many are seriously wounded). So it's no wonder they seem happy to shoot.

Can't see Americans ever being willing to give them up though, "constitutional rights" etc. Crazy country (albeit I love visiting).

The Wild West wasn’t as lawless as how people imagine it to have been. In a lot of towns, guns were banned.

If he wanted to shoot why do so to kill and not incapacitate? Why aim for the chest and not the leg, for instance?

It’s horrific and, has been said before, the obsession America has with guns results in death and destruction.

Aim for the centre of the target. Least chance of missing.

It's very hard to shoot someone in the leg or arm, given they're the bits which are thin, move fastest and you haven't got time to take careful aim. Pistols are not that accurate unless at absolutely point blank range (low velocity, short barrel).

Plus there's still a good chance of killing someone someone by hitting the major artery in the leg.

So it is a case of shoot to kill and then try and repair the damage afterwards?

Yes. Or, rather, shoot to make sure you hit, then repair the damage afterwards.

If you're shooting someone at all, then the decision has already been made (on some level) that it doesn't matter if they die. Because it's a very likely consequence.

In the US the police are all too often seen, and behave, as an occupying force - with very little restraint and up to now. almost no sanctions on them

To be fair, many, many Americans recognise that it's a massive problem and would love to see them gone. Some places are doing what they can to limit the problem. Gun ownership in New York city is incredibly difficult for example.

Unfortunately, there are many, many other Americans who hang their entire cultural identity off firearms, and thanks to the way the political system here is structured here, they enjoy having disproportionate amounts of power and are able to be a major obstacle to reform.

In the same way that not wearing a face mask isn't just about not wearing a face mask, owning a gun isn't always just about owning a gun though - it's a tangible expression of one's mentality and political worldview.

And all that's not even touching upon the right wing politicians living in the pockets of gun manufacturers and the NRA. When you have public officials and the police themselves donating money to accused (White) mass shooters what hope is there?

That's why I've always been partial to the Larry McMurtry books set in the west. The west is portrayed as nothing other than scraping a living, travelling miles for water, running out of whiskey, getting lost, not finding water, eating your horse, getting yourself killed, being blasted by heat and frozen by cold, and in those moments you're not exhausted or struggling to survive, you're bored.

Most of the films involve the hero riding into town to find some injustice being done by baddie(s) over stolen land etc.

Earlier death of a 'goodie is followed by an even more dastardly act by said baddie(s).

Requiring action by hero.

Indeed, the whole problem is gun culture in the USA, which means that many supposedly trivial disputes or confrontations with the police lead to guns being pulled or used by felons or by trigger-happy cops. All the PC training in the world isn't going to cure that ill.
