Angela Rayner sacked on 19:32 - May 8 by Darth_Koont | She’s been disappointing for me but because she’s evidently tried to back up a largely Labour right leadership. Inevitable that her and Anneliese Dodds are going to carry the can. Stick a fork in Labour. It’s done. I don’t think there’s anybody these party ghouls haven’t betrayed to protect their cushy influence. |
You afe right about Labour being done Slaughtered in the mayoral elections in Manchester, Salford, Bristol, London and Liverpool. Wiped out totally in Wales And the first party in electoral history to not only lose a Parliamentary seat, but councillors on the same day as well People may laugh at you righties and your gullibility, but you can't be mocked on the point of accuracy... can you ?

I think it is more a case of let them see, hence Labour putting in a strong Remain candidate in a seat that voted 70% Leave in 2016 No amount of explaining some pretty basic stuff to UK fishermen could persuade them of reality. Only now as they wallow in their self inflicted suffering is the 'project fear' bleat not heard. And for all the excited squeaks, that are trying to distract from the alleged corruption at number 10, this is not anything like what the bigots are claiming - otherwise we would not have seen the results in Wales or the mayoral votes. Let's see how the land lies when furlough stops in September.

Indeed, a General Election is quite a different beast from local ones, or even by-elections.

As the BNP and Farage's various scams (parties, surely ?) have found out - as with other self acclaimed mould breakers. It is when reality hits and voters find there are not the jobs to go back to come September. Even the fruit picking will mostly be over by then. When the 'levelling up' is seen as no more than a few publicity rich gestures/photo ops*, but no real substance. When the implementation of import checks come in (July 2021) This is merely a delay of the inevitable. And a hard shock to come that will hit hardest the very ones gullible enough to believe a known liar * wot abart that gardin bridge, that bridge over the channel, the chair lift over the Thames, sorting out social care (July 2019), no customs checks in the Irish Sea, ................. ?

Angela Rayner sacked on 21:22 - May 8 by Guthrum | He would do well to. I don't think it's coming back, any more than Scotland has. After all, why would anyone in the North vote Labour, more than is the case anywhere else in the country? The 1980s were a long time ago, the region's industrial prosperity further back still. |
Quite. One good thing to come out of this for Labour is to stop seeing the North as a single entity that it somehow had a right to. It strikes me Hartlepool has quite a lot in common with somewhere like Ipswich (in which Labour did similarly badly on Thursday). But yeah, terrible from Starmer, even if he has found the key to uniting left and right in sacking Rayner. Hopefully he’ll be gone soon. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Angela Rayner sacked on 19:55 - May 8 by tractordownsouth | I'm with you that sacking Rayner goes against the "taking responsibility" line and it's incredibly disappointing if so. There are lots of problems and changes will need to be made but I don't think she's one of them. Hopefully she's just being moved back to education or something like that - she did well there. Crazy time to do it as well. Made 2 good gains in the mayoral race this evening so the focus should be on that. |
I think his sense of timing is poor. Saying I take full responsibility then immediately wheel out the firing squad seems idiotic to me. Why not wait a few weeks and shift her as part of a reshuffle? In terms of Rayner, I’m not a fan, but she does have a bit of energy and fight about her. A good thing. Dodds- weak as dishwater in every way. If they are going to make an impact on the government they need better than her.

I think Starmer’s planned reshuffle is going to unravel quicker than the proposed European Super League. He’s really weakened his position with this move. I like Starmer and he’s done a good job in detoxifying the Labour brand after Corbyn, but he’s coming across more like IDS with the Tories than Kinnock with Labour. Weak. Edit. The way this is now playing out Starmer is going to have to offer Rayner a massive promotion just to stop talk of a rebellion. [Post edited 9 May 2021 9:08]

I still don’t understand how Burnham managed to not be elected Labour leader instead of Corbyn. I was amazed, back in the day, how people I know who had been praising Burnham ended up voting for Corbyn. Thing would no doubt be so different now if that hadn’t happened.
