Doesn't really feel like the Ipswich way 09:14 - May 13 with 3615 viewsIPSWICHFANITFC

I'm not one to have a moan, but it doesn't feel like the Ipswich way.

Does the squad need a rebuild? Yes.
Did the ones out of contract deserve a new contract based on their performances? No (except maybe one or two at most).
Have the homegrown lads been let down by the senior players at the club for the past 2-3 years? Absolutely. That's why they're all on their way out.

There's always an extra incentive when you see homegrown players on the team sheet. I'm not surprised by a couple of names as they won't push us forwards, but I'm really disappointed to see 3 academy players told they can go when they're good enough and add something.

I won't be buying a season ticket. At the minute we don't have any players (literally) who I'd pay to watch. We may sign a few who are good players, but they won't have the same feel as watching one of our homegrown boys. Just like those boys, Ipswich is at the heart for us too and that's being stripped away.

The job seems to have got harder to get the fans back on board now - I'm sure I'm not the only one who's been rubbed up the wrong way seeing a few names told they can go.

Edit - Flynn Downes probably joins Luton and makes them a better team, but not wanted here. It doesn't add up.

Poll: If selling Jackson meant getting in a wide man, would you be happy with Garbutt?

Well it may not be about belonging for you, but for many people it is. I am interested to know what it is for you?

I agree that you would get many different answers, but I suspect they would largely be based around a number of themes. Now you may well then find you get the same themes at other clubs if you ask the same question, but that doesn't mean that there is neither value nor truth in them.

And maybe you don't think there is anything special or beautiful about our club, but I happen to and rightly or wrongly it is something I would like to preserve.

Based around a number of themes which more often that not do not consistently exist within our football club. So how can it be claimed to be our "way"?

The quote was tongue in cheek by the way.

Spot on

Why want a connolly when you have bishop.

Eh....because Connolly is better than Bishop.

Can't wait for our promising U18s to become disappointing failures as soon as they've played a bit for the first team.

I think Dyers recent comments about our youth development was quite telling, in that we just don't produce players that are very good beyond youth football anymore, and haven't done for a couple of decades. Despite what we might think, there is something not quite right with our youth system.

Cook is going to destroy this club, shame on him and the new owners for allowing it.

I think I'd argue that whilst they haven't continuously existed within our club, they probably have consistently existed, last 18 years aside.

But I think someone could write a whole thesis on this subject because it's clearly a pretty divisive one!

Probably best to wait a few months before going down this route yet again don't you think?

Could easily be a problem with the way the first team squad is planned, coached and set up, rather than the academy per se?

Fair point, you could be right. I just wonder whether some of us get a bit blinded by the thought that we have this great youth set up and that's part of the "Ipswich Way". Facts tell us otherwise - for all the thousands and thousands of players that have gone through the system over the past 20 years, and millions spent, the output of players that have gone on to succeed at the highest levels of football is pitifully thin. I again go back to Dyer's comments. He can see there's a problem there.

Didn’t realise the academy was being binned?

If we're not even interested in developing players of Dobra's profile from it, I don't see the point in having one?

Possibly they don’t think that he’s good enough for league football.

Well put and I have very similar feelings.

Yes change was needed but maybe throwing out babies with the bathwater.

Certainly possible they don't think he or any other academy products currently in the first team squad are good enough to play for Ipswich (good enough for league football seems a stretch to me). But that sort of brings us back to asking "what's the point of the academy?"

These players represent the best of their respective age groups, if we don't think they're worth developing, what are we doing?

Even recently we have produced young players good enough to play for England in age groups up to under 21. That includes Dozzell and Downes and possibly Nydam if memory serves. That suggests the academy is still effective. It seems as if they don’t kick on from there when they get in and around the first team.
