Biggest false economies? on 19:41 - May 27 by jeera | Getting a better price isn't pissing about. It's obtaining a better price. Like you do anything you use in copious amounts. I certainly wouldn't drive to a specific destination to save a few pennies, that wouldn't make sense. I would fill up on certain days when close to a garage offering the best prices. Obviously. |
I will bow to your experience mate. I'm not disagreeing that the self employed cabbie or small business would look at prices. I don't think many individuals or bigger companies* do though *Bigger companies will protect themselves via options on oil.

Bigger companies have their own pumps buddy, buying in bulk to obtain the best prices. Edit: or accounts with other firms that do. [Post edited 27 May 2021 19:53]

Good point. They'll still do oil futures though. Airlines are big on them. Hopefully we'll have electric planes soon so we don't have to get on Stokie's insane death trap.

"They'll still do oil futures though." And when buying those shares, do you think they will look for the best prices or just say sod it, and pay the first fee they see? And Stokie, do away with the glass floors or you're losing another customer. I don't want to see how far I could fall if the floor was to fail.

You win. I think we're actually agreeing. Agree. Maybe stick one area in where weirdos can go and stand on it and have their picture taken. I don't even like seeing between the boards on piers!

The make everything chalky and coated in some kind of grit. Sometimes glasses never seem to be truly cleanable again, like they've been sandblasted. This never happens with finish. It's weird but true. Here at least - maybe it's something about our water, but not yours? [Post edited 27 May 2021 20:34]

Well here's the thing. I am a bit of an old fashioned kind of guy so I don't touch dishwashers or washing machines, in return I don't expect Lady Lucan to mix cement or dig holes. Funnily enough this all seems to work very well. Anyhoo - Both wifey and I have always been stumped at the price difference between top brand and prison grade dishwasher tablets and we tried some cheap ones and apparently they were rubbish. I then read that Aldis were voted best dishwasher tablet and we tried them and they were very good (apparently) My own false economies would be non Fairy Liquid washing up stuff, anything other than Birds Eye Peas and sub £60 a gram coke.

Biggest false economies? on 18:32 - May 27 by jeera | People don't look at fuel prices?! Of course they do, that's why there are/have been price wars. If you are running a business; maybe running a few motors or a taxi driver doing a 1,000 miles per week, you are going to take price of fuel into consideration. It is different if you're running a car to Sainsbury's once a fortnight of course. Or like Fergal, are running a cost-effective mode of transportation. |
You've answered your own point there big guy.

Biggest false economies? on 19:37 - May 27 by jeera | It's not a case of 'worrying' about anything. The point is to maximise profit whilst minimalizing expenses. If you're spending thousands of pounds a year on fuel then you will ensure you are getting the best deal. It's like saying you run a restaurant but don't 'worry' about how much you pay for the raw ingredients. It doesn't make any sense. |
Well you said people don't look at it. I and various others on this thread don't because it's pretty trivial in the round. For context I did more miles on my bike last year than I did in my car. Driving a bit more now though. If it's your livelihood fair enough but to the average Joe, the potential savings versus pain in the Harris ratio are pretty minimal imo. 40 litres x 128p = £51.20 40 litres x 133p = £53.20 Not even a pint or a coffee and when you factor in the general theory that cheap supermarket petrol is slightly less efficient, to me I just don't think it's worth any deliberate thought for the average person and average annual motoring costs.
