Mass shootings are around 0.2% of annual US deaths from firearms. Even if you strip suicides out of the equation on the grounds that people will find alternative means of killing themselves, that means that mass shootings are less than 0.5% of firearm homicides. So while mass shootings attract huge media attention, they are a tiny part of the problem.

Do you ever bring gun control up in conversation over there? Or is it just something you keep your beak out of, Illy?
I'm sure it's discussed tangentially as he waves his Colt revolver around the local 7/11 as the cashier empties her till into a duffel bag.

I share my wisdom with the locals but they’ve grown up with the idea that guns are normal. They don’t see anything odd about keeping a small arsenal of weaponry at home.
As many others have said, if 20 kids getting slaughtered at school doesn’t change anything, nothing will.

I think it's important to look at who the victims of shootings are though. They don't tend to be blokes shooting at other blokes both armed with guns. It's school kids, minorities, innocent people. So while you are right, in a purely numbers sense, mass shootings get more than their share coverage, I think it's because of their horrific nature and as such completely understandable.
I think you're getting at the proliferation of guns in general being an awful problem over here, and I make you right.

I know this is a bit off topic but interestingly its been shown that removing a means of suicide actually reduces deaths. People don't always seek alternate means of killing themselves as the act of suicide is often linked to a specific means of doing so in a phenomenon know as coupling.

That's what you'd think, isn't it? Best keep well out of it.
Anyone who mentions how much they earn deserves a special place in hell.
You wouldn't be saying that if you earned too much to get a stimulus check*. Damn you Biden.

Footers is more of a Fray Bentos man I believe, or a minced beef Findus Crispy Pancake if he's celebrating something special.

My read of this then is that while Mass Shootings are a huge tragedy the issue of gun deaths in the US is many many times worse than mass shootings alone indicate.

Yes, the random murder of innocent citizens, especially children, seems worse & no wonder it gets huge attention. Fortunately the horrors at Hungerford & later Dunblane led to largely sensible gun restrictions being imposed in the UK. I do see polls which indicate that a majority of American support greater restrictions on gun ownership, but these are inevitably blocked by Washington politicians who fear being targeted by the well funded NRA & others, with their absurd arguments. Yes, the availability of guns does also inevitably lead to a greater number of suicides, some of which might be avoided.

Which is also why newspaper editors used to follow a code of ethics which specifically called on them not to go into details of suicide methods, or to give prominence to suicide within a story.
Then clickbait happened.
They also used to always refer to helpline numbers if the topic was even raised.

Mine is look at the linked Guardian graphic and multiply the figures by 500, for deaths by firearms.
Which is really f king sobering.
